How did you manage focus stacking during shooting, everything manually?

Yes, everything is done manually. This shot was done tethered into Capture One, which allows me to follow the focus (which I do near to far) using the focus mask tool on the computer monitor. The stack of images (DNGs) was transferred to Helicon focus to create the final stacked image. The stacked image (DNG) was then edited in Capture One. As there is a plug-in for Helicon Focus in Capture One, the process is more-or-less seamless.

In the field, I create stacked images the same way (on an SL2), but collect the images in camera, then load the images into Capture One. I have not tried this tethered into the iPad version of Capture One yet, but will in the spring. That would make following focus much easier. Of course, focus-stacking small subjects out-of-doors presents additional challenges, not the least of which are small movements of air that can change the position of the subject. So creating multiple stacks of the subject give you a better chance of getting the shot, especially if there would be no chance of go back later.

On a related not, I would hope that Leica would implement automate focus shifting/stepping in a future update to the firmware. It is a function available in other brands and should be easily implemented since the L mount lens can already be automatically focused.
