Is this just a gimmick or actually useful?

I do understand the geo tagging, but fear it will just eat up my battery even faster. Battery is not great on the Q3 compared to other cameras.

The new Q3 battery is 2200 versus the older 1860 battery. That said I never leave home without a second battery.

For those who need it, using the app for remote release is often better than using the camera self timer

Well, 

you can do a lot with the app. 
you can open the app and use it as a screen and then you are looking at the screen and not at the camera, which can be useful. 
 

you can use the app as a remote to use long esposures. 
 

timelapse etc … 

 

the app is also helpful if you are filming . 
 

And it’s also up to us the user to wish for things. 
 

I would love to have the presets on the app a d been able to edit them.
