Olaf_ZG Posted March 3, 2024 Share #1 Posted March 3, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently acquired a - as new - mp240, and bought a new 35 summicron asph (v2) for it. A great daily carry, so I thought. When downloading the files (photo mechanic), the previews look terrible. So fakely over sharpened that it hurt the eyes. Most images are being binned. The ones I liked, I did put through LR and results are not that bad in the end, especially when photographed from nearby. I might be spoiled with the rendering of the m10m and sl2s. I noticed similar ugly rendering on my Q’s. Further testing is needed: I now put the cron on the m10m to see if it is the lens, meanwhile my 50mm planar will sit on the mp. May be it is photo mechanic? Anyone else doesn’t like the outcome of its mp? You might say it is not a big deal, but to me it is, as it is rather bothering to cull images which one can not judge properly.

tom.w.bn Posted March 3, 2024 Share #2 Posted March 3, 2024 Your workflow is unclear. Why don't you load all the files in LR and evaluate them there? Why let Photomechanic do a DNG conversion with unclear outcome. The embedded JPG in the DNG is 160x120px. You can't do anything with it. I had no problem with the M240 files. Have thousands here, all good.

PM is great for culling, now I photograph less, but with events one has many images. The renaming part is great, cause a client will never know by the file number that you deleted some images. Maybe, for the mp I should download both raw plus jpg in order to have better previews.
84bravo Posted March 3, 2024 Share #4 Posted March 3, 2024 I recall having to make some changes in my PM preferences for Leica DNG that made everything work properly. Try this if you haven't already. Download the free Adobe DNG converter from Adobe. Then go to settings (preferences) and then to the Render Cache tab. There check the Enable RAW Rendering and then check the box to use the Adobe DNG converter. Let me know if that works for you.

It's most important feature for news outlets is the IPTC fields and how they are configured and the FTP tool. Sure, you can do culling and captioning with LR but its just not up to the task in a deadline environment. Photo Mechanic is not an editing tool. It is for culling, captioning, and filing via FTP. Once a photo is selected from the preview it is opened automatically by the photo editing program of your choice as a DNG. To see the previews from DNG files rather than Adobe RAW it needs to use the Adobe Raw converter plugin. Its a free download from Adobe.
