Red Deer, Scotland - Topaz applied.

Considering it was dusk I'm pretty happy with the performance of the lens.

Young Red Deer Stag, Scotland

This chap was bellowing from 5am - I think he was just practising for the real thing but the valley was booming with vocal replies from his competitors.

Tried that doesn’t work I have had shutter blur at 1/2000 th.

Exactly how have you determined the source of your "shutter blur?"  As somebody who has been professionally shooting sports for 30+ years, and customarily shoots cars moving at more than 200 MPH using shutter speeds well below 1/1000, I have found many things that will create a blurred image, but one of them is not the shutter on a mirrorless camera.  There is very little mass in the shutter curtain, and it is very well damped in modern cameras.  If you are getting blurred shots, at 1/2000, check your shaky hands or moving subject before blaming the shutter.

For anyone interested— here is a Wildlife Photography specific review of the Leica SL3 and Sigma 500 f/5.6 Sports lens. I spent 6 weeks in Alaska and Hokkaido, Japan photographing nearly everyday with this combination of camera and lens. My experiences and thoughts are at the link below.
Cheers.

The SL3 exhibits clear and easy to replicate shutter shock below 1/f. While I agree that it’s not an issue at 1/2000 try a simple test at 1/ 1/2f with any lens longer than 150mm. 1 shot with mechanical and one with electronic. The SL3 needs EFCS.

Can EFCS be FW implemented, or does it require some sort of HW engineering? Just wondering… In any case, something to wish for a possible SL3-S.

Hi - thanks for the detailed review.

Obviously disappointing but seems fair, balanced and true to real world use from an amateur perspective at least.

Hopefully firmware will improve the autofocus issues to some degree, but it would seem better not to expect too much over the coming months.

Leica clearly cannot compete with the best tools for this sort of work - thankfully they do excel in many other areas.

Thanks for watching and for your considerate comments. Yes, the experiment shows that there is not yet a perfect camera for all situations. However, as you say, I firmly believe that the Sl3 has earned a place in my kit due to the areas where it does indeed excel. But the Sigma 500 doesn’t make sense to me because of the Sl3’s flaws in Auto focus and animal tracking in the existing beta version. Best tools for various jobs. Exactly right.
