I have a Q2 (purchased recently) and have used Ms on and off for 12 years, currently M10-P, 24 Lux, 35 Lux ASPH v1, Voigtlander Ultron 75.

My M I use for serious photography, mainly on the street as I have such a well settled rangefinder workflow and often I don't either frame or focus via the camera. I love the 24 Summilux most.

Q2 I use if it's VERY wet or if I'm just carrying a camera casually for family shots and don't have the mental space to 'get in the zone'. I like the rendering of the Q2 but not as much as the M lenses.

Interesting thread. I come into it from the opposite view. I’ve been an M user since 1966. I guess I’m on my seventh M now.  (I still have all of them.) I do not own a Q.  So I’ve been wondering about the Q and all I hear is how great it is. I have no doubt. Anyway, carry on and best to all of you with your photography.

Sorry to bump this thread but as I hinted in my earlier post, I am seriously considering selling my M11 and getting a Q3. I have a Q2 and I’m finding that I simply take better pictures with it than I do with my M11.

I know they’re completely different experiences and that rangefinder diehards will always be attracted to an M over a Q but I’d be interested to know if anyone here has swapped an M10 or M11 for a Q3 and regretted it. I don’t have the money to trade the Q2 for a Q3 so it would have to be the M11 which makes sense as I’m finding I have to force myself to take the M11 out instead of the Q2

So why not just sell the M11 and pocket the money? Good question and i might just do that. The only thing that attracts me to the Q3 is the sensor and the rear screen. The M11 is marginally better at low light photography and significantly better at infrared photography (which I do a fair bit of). I’m not interested in a dedicated Monochrome camera as i prefer to process b&w in post.

I had a Q2, then an M11. When the Q3 came out I bought one, but I never felt that it was a significant upgrade from the Q2. For me, the autofocus isn't really a great improvement over the Q2 as the face/people detection is not well implemented compared to Nikon, Sony, Canon etc, so I ended up mainly using centre focus just as I'd done with the Q2. Also, the image quality from the Q3 didn't seem significantly better than the Q2 when I looked back at photos I'd taken with both.

I then realised that I'd bought the M11 and tried to use it like a Q, mainly using the Visoflex and rear screen, when I should have just learned to use the range finder properly. I've now just bought an M11-P and am really enjoying the simplicity with the LCD turned off and getting better at understanding how to use the rangefinder and zone focussing.

So, long story short, I think you might miss the M11 once it's gone and I'm not sure how much advantage the Q3 will give you. A really boring answer, but one that might save you money to spend on other things.

I have owned/used M cameras since the original M6 was a new camera.  I have owned M2, m6, M6TTL and M7 film cameras; M10, M10r digital Ms.  But nowadays the digital camera I regularly use is my Q2.  I tried the Q3 but it offered nothing I needed or wanted over the 2.

I quit shooting 35mm film and my film preference is primarily 4x5 though I occasionally shoot 120.

The US Army was kind enough to issue me a Leica M2R with 35mm, 50mm and 135mm lenses, all in a nice, leather Leica shoulder bag.  I really liked that camera but, unfortunately, they took it back when I left South Vietnam.  I always remembered it, though!  When I retired 10 years ago, I bought a M240 M-P along with the necessary lenses, EVF and other accoutrements.  I really liked it and took it on several extended motorcycle trips all over the US and abroad.  Attached is the case I fashioned for it for those trips.  As I've aged, though, I started using that little Fuji X100f, my back-up camera, more and more.  In May, while on a motorcycle trip to Portugal, I stopped for a couple of days in Porto and, almost across the street, was a Leica store.  I was curious about the Q3 and the salesman let me "mess" with one for about twenty minutes.  I was hooked and, when I got home, I purchased one.  I've been using it for a few weeks and really enjoy it!  I'm going to sell my M series camera and the Fuji.

Mike
