I've heard a few people claim that the Pre-FLE Lux ASPH has more classic character than other modern ASPH lenses, so I was thinking of trying one out. I had the pre-asph for a long time, but got a little tired of the wide open schtick on that one, so I'm looking for something closer to my 50mm Lux v2 - still classic/vintage rendering, but well-behaved (mostly). I find that I love modern ASPH lenses for color film, but not very much on b/w.

Does anyone have any examples of the pre-FLE displaying what could be considered obvious "classic" character?

I have a Lux 35 asph.. I take pictures, independent of the character of the used lens. Bokeh is - of course - an interesting aspect of a picture.  I take it, as it comes. I have a neutral-density filter for the lens, but I have never used it.

Just some random shots of my 35mm lux ASPH pre-FLE and 35mm lux ASPH FLE for comparison.

Personally I love and prefer the rendering of the 35mm lux asph fle wide open.

Very cinematic rendering, if you nail it at 1.4 it's incredible - but the focus did my head in. I believe it's a bit like the Zeiss 50/1.5, some copies are calibrated wide open and some at f2.8. My copy was dead on at 2.8 but 1.4 was a shimmying guesswork* at various distances and I got tired of it eventually. I think there was an article somewhere which compared the 35/1.4 AA, pre-FLE and FLE, in my eyes the pre-FLE was the best combination of sharpness and rendering. If my copy was calibrated at wide open, I would still have it - so do look out for that when buying.

*I'm being slightly dramatic, but when you know what the lens is capable of wide open, to miss that focus slightly is annoying.

Thank you! Definitely doesn't look overly harsh or clinical, which is my main concern.

Some pictures (see following posts) that might demonstrate this lens' behaviour fully open. Love this lens. Not ¨very sharp¨ fully open, but with a very pleasant softness (some glow maybe?) in my opinion (see cropped sticker on car). And quickly becomes truly sharp when stopped down. However, this lens never becomes ¨clinical¨ in my mind. As said; just love it!

All with M10

I adored the original, though the issue of focus shift was real. I have the FLE now and still love it, but it never had exactly the same magic for me. I think this is more about the pre FLE being one of my first Leica lenses and I took so many pictures with it I loved. I also preferred the ergonomics (I loved the big weird flat hood...so easy to stand the camera on it. For some reason it just felt right to me.).
