I am out using the camera with one extra battery whist a spare battery is charging up in the hotel room. The third one gets charged overnight. The ability to charge in-camera via USB-C doesn't in anyway prevent one form also charging out of camera in a separate charger.
Advertisement Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Hi BradS, Take a look here Q3 Monochrom ...Yes / NO. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Mikep996 Posted March 14 Share #122 Posted March 14 I guess I'm one of apparently very few who think that the concept of having to buy one camera to take color images and another to take black and white images is absurd. Oh well, I admit the world is rapidly passing me by!

Oh well, I admit the world is rapidly passing me by! One of course needn’t buy a color version if shooting approach is exclusively B&W. Also, it’s less about “need” for many, and more about enjoying a different mindset when using a Monochrom. The world changed with digital color, given the possibility to edit in color or B&W; while using a Monochrom can actually be more of a throwback, like using a film M with only B&W film (no distractions for considering potential color pics). I have both color and Monochrom M bodies, but never take them out together. I initially thought the concept of a monochrome sensor camera was absurd… until I actually used one for an extended period. Different shooting experience.. for me. Edited March 16 by Jeff S
Mikep996 Posted May 17 Share #124 Posted May 17 (edited) Although I do not own a monochrom Leica, I wanted to want one and I tried really hard researching on line to see the difference between pics taken with a monochrom version of an M or Q compared to the standard version. At any ISO I would ever use I can see no difference. I can see it at very high ISOs so certainly there is a difference at that level but at ISO levels that it matters, it doesn't (for me). Of course, there are plenty of items that I (and I suspect others here) purchase because they want it, not because they need it or will even use it. And I admit I still think about a monochrom Leica for that reason. Heck, I could point to a Martin Custom Shop D45 guitar hanging on the wall that is there because I wanted THAT specific custom guitar but it has NEVER been played outside the house and although I perform at gigs 3-4 times/week, I would never take that guitar to a gig. People are strange... I hope I might still find a reason to buy a monochrom Leica... Although the Q3 (28) works better for me overall than a Q3 43 would, I suspect a Q3 43M (if such a thing ever shows up) MIGHT be the tipping point for a monochrom purchase. Otherwise, when I want that "real" black and white experience, I load BW film in my 1984 M6!!! Edited May 17 by Mikep996

Otherwise, when I want that "real" black and white experience, I load BW film in my 1984 M6!!! For me, the reason was included in the last response to you two months ago. But I gave up film in 2009, with all the pros and cons that entails. Also, not all Monochroms are created equally, as they come in different forms, and generations. My M9M and M10M have different qualities and advantages. One only knows by experience using one’s own shooting, editing and print workflow; not something that can be adequately addressed by reading and perusing others’ work or opinions. You could rent a Q2M for a few hundred bucks for a week. A lot more value in my opinion than endless curiosity and wasted time researching. If you do, it’s the only camera you should use for that entire time. Edited May 17 by Jeff S
schipper Posted May 17 Share #126 Posted May 17 If you do not see some differences from a q2 monochrome picture and a q3 converted in black and white their is no point moving to monochrome. For other people, it is obvious that the q2 monochrome or M monochrome pictures have something that jump into your eyes immediatly due to 3D pop and modeling.

Not so for many, using any of Leica’s 4 Monochroms, as the shooting mindset (ignoring color distractions and temptations to shoot color pics) is key. Like using B&W film. luetz Posted May 17 Share #128 Posted May 17 I am definitely in the "bring it on" camp. I have come a long way from multiple camera body's with an assortment of lenses and accessories and now at "peace" with my Q3. If a monochrome version of the Q3 can excel the quality of a converted image, I am "all in". I would also be in favour of dropping all video functions for a pure "stills only" version of the Q3M. Bring it on...where do I sign...
Budfox Posted May 19 Share #129 Posted May 19 Apparently there are issues with the inability of the current 60MP sensor to focus with PDAF without the bayer filter - therefore they say there won't be a Q3 mono with the current sensor (see other forum discusions). The Q2M can't do focus tracking which is a similar deficit because color is needed for tracking. Of course - a Q3M will probably be released the day after I post this!

I for one would jump at something like a Q3 mono. Currently get my mono fix from a 246.

Q2 mono is widely available everywhere, especially in North America. Don't get too excited. I think Q3 mono will never come.

This has been covered so many times on this forum alone that it now merits a cheap and tacky t-shirt sold in Times Square or Piccadilly Circus. Unless Leica have bought a new version of the sensor they use in the Q3, it’s not going to happen.
