Been reading this thread with interest.  I have the Q3 as my only Leica now, but had the R system with the 100 APO.  Converted it to Nikon mount when I went digital back in about 2010 and use it now on my Nikon Z with the appropriate adapter. An amazing lens.  My father-in-law bought the Nikon 105/2.8 G and I had the opportunity to do a comparison a few years ago and the APO blew it away wide open and at smaller stops.  I had thought that a more modern lens would have performed better than that old design but i was wrong.  I am now wondering if the Nikon Z 105 Macro would match or surpass the APO since the other Z lenses far exceed the performance of their F mount predecessors.

If Leica would produce their own macro in L mount I would consider the SL body.  Or does anybody know if the Sigma or Panny Macro meets or exceeds the 100 APO R lens.

Sigma DG DN 105mm has a fantastic sharpness. Without testing the two side-by-side, I will say that the Sigma is on par with, or even sharp er than, R100APO. Regarding preferences for the rendering, one has to check and evaluate after extended use of both lenses, I guess.

I’m not a macro photographer. The closest I’ve shot were wedding rings. That said, sometimes a closeup is interesting. Be it at home or for travel.

This lens is really lightweight and small in comparison to the lux or zooms. A joy to carry around.

Some from my first walk in the village, on the 2s.

As a normal lens:

@Olaf_ZG - thanks for posting.  I completely agree on the pleasure of having the option to switch between close and distant.  It's the one thing I miss about not having a Q.  Seriously tempted by the Q43 - but I still love my M10-R and the options it offers... Heigh ho - the luxury of choice 😉!

Went out for a walk today. The camera performs really well (to me), and I guess I have a great travel setup for when I don’t want to carry the zooms: the 100macro, the apo21 and the q43.
From today…

Hi Chris

The Panasonic 100 is a real no brainer - It's so light - and I think it probably is better than the wonderful Leica 100 macro, and it's certainly easier to use . . ..  as for the Q3 43, try one at your peril - I was sent one to test, and I was absolutely certain that I wouldn't want one (I don't have any other Q cameras). . . . but that 43mm lens is irresistible . . .

HAPPY NEW YEAR - and all the best from Suffolk

Stop that, Jono! A friend brought his over yesterday and showed me his recent pics (he’s a good photographer). Yikes. He uses his to supplement his SL3, mostly for easy travel, and has sold his M bodies (instead adapting his M lenses to the SL3).

I’m now thinking about buying one, and trading my M10-R (BP), since the M10 Monochrom is my primary M, and the SL 2 (and 24-90) covers my other needs, including color.  So far I’ve resisted adding a third  system, and still don’t like the absence of a joy stick. Choices.

Well, for me the Q3 43 is no substitute for an M - but it is an interesting addition, but also, if you are currently using the SL2/M10-R then the Q3 43 is throwing another sensor and methodology into the mix, perhaps that isn't the right thing to do? I'm currently using the M11/SL3/Q343, and they all have the 'same' sensor, which makes post processing easier.

Maybe you should stick with what you have until you replace your SL2 . . . . . . sounds like buying an M3 43 would be opening Pandora's Box!

Thanks, Jono, good logic as always. My friend also suggests that I trade the SL2 for the SL3! One thing to consider is that I rarely use the M10-R, kind of a waste, but the Monochrom gets most all of my M attention, and those files stand alone.

Shame the SL3 has that funky on/off button; might annoy.  And also that the menus/icons aren’t shared with the Q3 43 (maybe a future change with FW update?).

If I got the Q3 43 (favorite M focal lengths are 35/50), it would likely be a travel companion, marginally more compact than an SL2/3 with an M lens, and with better weather sealing.

Not clear cut, especially since I’ve lately been consolidating gear, and am committed to avoid adding a piece without divesting another.  Reminds me, I still need to sell my M Monochrom, which sits idle.

The funky on/off button also has it's good points, and some small firmware changes could make it much less awkward. . . . I think it would be great if they updated the Q3 43 menus and icons to match the SL3 - no idea if they will, but it sounds like a good idea and presumably would not be too difficult (same sensor, same processor).

Maybe trading in the M10-R and getting a Q3 43 would be a good simple step.

Thanks for your thoughts. I’m still undecided. I need to either start using the M10-R more or sell it, irrespective of the Q. I’ve used M bodies since the mid 80’s, and love the simplicity, but these old eyes and shakier hands benefit from new tech like magnification and stabilization. At the same time, the modern digital alternatives annoy me with all the options and resulting complications. The M10-M will surely stay, but at a crossroads for color digital alternatives.

Apologies to others for going far OT!

Does anyone have ideas on the somewhat older, comparable Sigma 90mm/2.8 DG DN? Same weight, but much smaller and while it does not go 1:1 at all , it has good enough close up for me I think. (I like the Sigma 45mm and expect comparable quality)

I bought this lens cheap, and having sold off a big part of my SL system, this lens isn’t really worth selling, but it delivers great images from the garden… on the SL2s
