Long time no see ...

I'm not into Football at all, but I love how enthusiastic some of the fans can be. Like this chap. Just had a quick chat, but his passion was very infectious. Even as a German, I might be rooting for Scotland tonight, just because of this lovely encounter.

Back in Leipzig, where I met Lio. She agreed to have her picture taken, but she didn't like looking at the camera. So we decided on these pseodo-candid shots.

Barista

Erolana, 10/24

If you ever visit the archaeological site of Herculaneum, have an Espresso at this place on Via IV Novembre. Great coffee and the nicest guy! We had no coins to pay and were obvioulsy tourists, but he trusted us to pay after we visited the site. Which we did, of course.

Nice thread @Almizilero . I'm about to embark on something similar and it's way out of my comfort zone.

I've become quite dissatisfied with photographing environments with people in them... I've realised that I'm far more interested in photographing people in their environments. It seems like such a small difference but it takes a completely different approach and a completely different set of skills.  Thanks for the inspiration 👍

Feel the fear and do it anyhow. Ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could happen and you’ll realise that it’s probably just a refusal. I guess that 8-9 people out of 10 that I approach say yes. It’s a very rewarding aspect of photography and you’ll get unique results and connections that are life-enhancing. Good luck.

Thanks David, I appreciate the encouragement. It's sometimes a fear they'll say no, but more often it's a fear that I'll disrupt their day or make them feel awkward... or maybe that i'll force them into an uncomfortable situation which they won't really know how to get out of it. Silly thing to worry about but there it is.

I'm ok with asking certain people - mostly those who are clearly comfortable with public attention. Those who are just quietly sitting there doing their own thing are the ones I worry about approaching.

Yes, just go for it! I've actually been very lazy in this regard lately, trying to do more candid street photography. But I more and more get the feeling that I loose interesting pictures by not approaching people. Strangely, I still have concerns doing it, even though I only had one nasty experience so far. People are mostly really nice about it. I would say my hitrate is 50/50, but usually refusals are friendly. It all depends on the mood of the day. And for me, on the first person I ask. If they say yes, I can get into a flow and get a bunch of shots in one day. If they refuse, I can usually just go home.

Here's one I haven't shown yet:

Steve, perhaps look at my web site? I give talks to camera clubs about my approach, did one last night. After the event, I send a PDF with some hints so if you feel able, send me a personal message with your email address and I’ll forward it to you. Incidentally, late last year I took some photos of two lovely young women, sent them copies and received thanks for “ making us feel special”. Another young woman when asked replied “why ever not?”

SL2 + a 77 year old Summitar collapsible lens (50mm).

This is the first stranger that I've ever stopped to ask for a street portrait, and we didn't share the same language. He thought I was asking him to take a photo of me, so he put all his gear down and reached for my camera. I signalled that I actually wanted to take a picture of him and he kindly agreed. The portrait ended up being a bit of a mix of slightly front focusing and just the general softness of the lens wide open. Nervousness stupidly made me rush it, hopefully I won't make that mistake again! Fremantle, Western Australia.
