shuttershaz Posted December 24, 2023 Share #1 Posted December 24, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, Been fiddling around with the Q3 & really like it. I've read and watched lots of reviews & learned a lot on this forum over the past few months. Take it easy on me though, I have some beginner-type questions. When using Adobe Lightroom (not classic), what is the preferred Profile to use when importing DNGs? I was using Adobe Color for some time, but recently thought perhaps I should switch to using Adobe Standard v2. The thought process here being that standard v2 must be - the standard profile to use without too much alteration of the raw file. Is this correct? What do you folks use around here? The colors look a bit more dull than Adobe Color, but I assume that must be by design. Welcome, dear visitor! Secondly (and please don't tell me I can make my own presets), what are some reputable presets I can use with my Q3? As stated earlier, I'm quite a beginner to editing, and I'd love to try out different presets. Yes I can make my own, but I'd rather use a preset from someone who actually knows what they are doing. David Farkas from Red Dot Forum shared some of his presets a few years ago, but David & Josh made it quite apparent in one of their recent livestreams that we shouldn't hold our breath for new presets for more recent cameras, including the Q3. I'm open to buying presets - and if any forum members want to share their own preset creations I would be very receptive to that as well! So far the only presets I've tried which are specifically for the Q3 are from MrLeica. This is all for personal use, I am a hobbyist, not a professional. Thanks for reading & happy holidays! FusionX.Photo Posted December 24, 2023 Share #2 Posted December 24, 2023 For best results add "embedded" to your favourites and use it, that's the Leica profile.
Patrick NL Posted December 24, 2023 Share #3 Posted December 24, 2023 +1. I use Embedded too in LR Classic as my default. Better try stuff yourself before considering buying presets. Better to build you own. And try the ones that are present by default and make your own variations of them.
spark plugs. Posted December 25, 2023 Share #4 Posted December 25, 2023 Sorry for the ignorance. What’s “embedded?”

shuttershaz Posted December 25, 2023 Author Share #6 Posted December 25, 2023 I read that Adobe Standard is what Adobe individually makes for each camera (ex: Q3), vs Embedded which is what Leica picks and wants you to see. Not sure of the accuracy of that however
Miltz Posted December 25, 2023 Share #7 Posted December 25, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I've been trying to find the default color profile since August for my Q3 in adobe camera raw. (Lightroom is the same) When I saw this post I immediately ran to test it out. Sadly I can confirm that Legacy Embedded is NOT the standard profile for the Q3. I compared Legacy Embedded to the Standard JPEGs out of camera and the look nothing a like. It's very odd that Leica and Adobe haven't created matching color profiles. I actually prefer Leica's standard profile sometimes, but since I shoot raw it's impossible for me to get those exact colors in Camera Raw. If anyone has more info on this topic please share. LocalHero1953 Posted December 25, 2023 Share #8 Posted December 25, 2023 I seriously advise you to avoid other peoples' presets and start to learn how to get the best out of your own images and Lightroom. If you just use presets, your photos will look just like other peoples': generic. Of course you will be dissatisfied to start with, but you will gradually develop your own eye, and learn how, using Lightroom's tools, you can make your raw image look like what you had in mind when you pressed the shutter. I am also an amateur, but I started with Lightroom 3 and gradually worked out how to use its tools. Everyone has their own approach: mine is a gradualist one, moving sliders a bit to see what happens. A friend took the opposite approach, whacking the sliders to extremes and then winding them back - his initial results were terrible, but he learned quickly! Don't get hung up on whether to use Adobe Standard, Colour or embedded. Do YOU see a difference? If not, then concentrate on matters where you can see distinct changes for better or worse. No one looking at your photos, either in a national gallery or on this forum is likely to ask which profile you used.

andybarton Posted December 25, 2023 Share #11 Posted December 25, 2023 It’s been working fine with LR since I bought it in 2015. Whether Leica embeds profile or not, I don’t know. It doesn’t look like it. I could make my own if I knew what I was doing.
LocalHero1953 Posted December 25, 2023 Share #12 Posted December 25, 2023 I use three presets regularly. The two I made are: ‘Landscape less green’ which is to reduce the acid green effect you see in some grass; ‘Pink skin reduction’ which reduces the blotchy pink/magenta colour you get with some individuals (all digital sensors are over-sensitive in the IR band, but some control it better than others). The only manufactured preset I use is the in-built ‘B&W Punch’ as a quick monochrome conversion.

250swb Posted December 27, 2023 Share #18 Posted December 27, 2023 I've never like Leica's own profiles, especially with my current M10. As Paul @LocalHero1953 says above, use your eye, as long as colour balance isn't so far off you get asked about it everything else from warm to cool, vivid to muted, contrasty to soft is about interpretation and what you feel about an image.

I’m not sure I will use them as I like to mix my own settings to suit the image shot, but it’s good to know you need to be aware of what’s under every rock and stone in the program. Alberti Posted December 28, 2023 Share #20 Posted December 28, 2023 (edited) Apologies if it is mentioned already, but I might add that LRc has a page about how imports are handled. There the 'recipe' has to be given, it is standard adobe (and a pain). In the preferences menu ('voorkeuren = preferences) you select what presets you want LR to use (and Camera Raw works the same): Welcome, dear visitor!
