Question for Q3 owners:

Can you see a difference if you compare the settings "Exposure preview P-A-S-M" and Exposure preview P-A-S"?

As I understand it, with the second setting when you half-press the shutter button, the viewfinder image should remain unchanged and not give a preview of the exposure result with the selected manual setting .

If you set the aperture, time and ISO accordingly when using a manual flash, then in situations where you need the flash, this combination represents an underexposure for the lighting conditions and the exposure preview results in a dark image.

When using the flash, I don't want this darkening because I want to see my subject...

According to the manual, the P-A-S setting should do exactly this.

But the behavior doesn't change with my Q3.....

I see this difference:

  • PASM: I'm in a dimly lit room: if I set iso to 50, aperture to f1.7 and shutterspeed to 1/2000, the preview image is black even before pressing the shutter button half way down.
  • PAS: Same situation and settings as above, the preview doesn't show an exposure preview at all.
  • PAS: Same settings, except for aperture: f16 instead of f1.7. The preview doesn't show an exposure preview. But, when I half press the shutter, the preview dims to almost black. This happens because the camera closes the aperture to f16 and the preview can't be brightened enough to compensate. This isn't an exposure preview; the actual image is much darker than the preview.

I couldn't find a way to stop the camera from closing the aperture when half pressing the shutter button.

I talked to Leica support in Germany and they told me to reset to factory settings.

Since I did this, everything is ok and I can use my good old Metz flashlight without any problems in dark conditions...

You would use the PAS setting, if you like to see a well lit scene even through the viewfinder, even if the scene will be completely underexposed when taking a photo. You would use that for example if you use flash and you have a large difference between natural light and artificial light.

The PAS setting however gives me zebra warnings in the viewfinder, even though the exposure reading suggests underexpose by quite a margin. I guess the zebra is just taken from the image presented in the finder which of course only works with exposure simulation.

My Q3 is set to p.a.s.m. mode And that I expose the person in the photo according to the amount of light and exposure I want to have in the final result I give a half click with the focus point on the object Then the exposure opens for me by say two apertures

What with working quickly with the camera and a changing environment it can be confusing I have another camera from a competing company that I work with at my job And when I expose the camera as I want, I give half a press to focus And I have no change in the viewfinder At the level of exposure and the final result I would be happy to help on this matter

The only way to stop this from happening (half press, evf or lcd dims) is to set the focus to either AFc or AFs, *NOT* iAF.
Unrelated, but yet another tip for an odd Q3 behavior is when you can't get the last image to display after shooting--need to turn off the Perspective Control.

I discovered that PASM =Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual —-enables exposure preview for all modes, including manual, whereas PAS disabled exposure preview in manual mode

Q3 or any Q is not meant for M mode. That job is exclusively reserved for my M cameras 😆

You have to set it to manual when using a generic flash unit on or remote (my preference)...then do few test shots and you are set

I prefer shooting with any camera in M mode, although I sometimes use Auto-ISO.
