I always thought the Leica Look was a lens thing. My understanding is the post processing of a photo has nothing to do with the Leica Look. The unique Look is based on the physical/optical characteristics of the lens to create a 3D Looking image. I watched a video where the lens engineer for Leica said to use their lenses wide open, in this case f/1.7. The look that you achieve when doing this is different to an alternate brand lens at the same aperture.......there is some optical warping or physics that just give a Leica lens wide open a unique look. May be I am wrong but since owning the Q3 I find the photos oddly more pleasant to look at than my other cameras. Also, I only shoot f/1.7 unless I need faster shutter and I will stop down to 2, or 2.8.

I think Leica are deliberately using the phrase “Looks” to hook in those people who have heard of it and think this processing will get it for them without any work.  Enter to just think of them as “Leica Recipes “.

Fuji did a much better job here 😇

So far, Leica Looks are only available as a JPG image style. Many years ago (at the time of the M9), I suggested that Leica should offer presets for Lightroom. At the time, I was concerned with the black and white conversion, which Leica does very well for JPG, but which I couldn't manage so easily in Lightroom myself (it's better now). Today, Leica could no longer provide presets, but write the development settings for Lightroom directly into the DNG. Then the photo is displayed in Lightroom directly with these settings ("Leica Look"), but you can also switch it off. Technically this should not be a problem, Leica already does this with the data for Perspective Control and with the toning settings on the M11 Mono.

Do you only get Leica look if you do not alter the RAW or JPG in anyway?

As soon as start applying any post processing edits (apart from cropping I suppose) that surely must take it away from the Leica look.

Thoughts ?

Since Leica fotos app makes it easy for transfer between iOS, I’ve been just using the auto edit of iPhone photo app.

pic is jpeg large sooc.

Sooc is what my eyes see. But photo app makes the subject stands out.
Thus sooc looks good, but autoedit brings out subject more.
I find the auto edit from the iPhone increases the brilliance, shadows, contrast, brightness, black point, saturation. Decreases the exposure & highlights.

I rarely process on my phone but the iPhone auto edit is pretty good. If it gets the image in a decent place, I sometimes then polish it off in Snapseed.

Who knows? The Leica Look is a chimera. It does not exist in reality.

Many many Leica users would strongly disagree with you!  Whatever marketing says or promises the fact that Leica deliver is proof enough that the Leica Look does exist.. 🍻

In that case I would like to see a clear and coherent definition. Or a double blind test that shows that it can be recognized.

Of course, if you’re a Leica shooter you don’t need a double blind test, you live it every time you press the shutter button. Non believers remain non believers. Some are non believers due to the fact that they cannot afford Leica gear, a sad fact but true. Jealousy also comes to mind. Bottom line, you do you, I do me.. 🍻

Oh no, firmly on the illusion side. I like Leica because it allows me to create the look want. I don’t want my gear to dictate the outcome.

That might well be true with film, with digital, Leica have already decided what the original outcome will be (algorithms and such) you PP so the truth is never really seen. The Leica look resides in the original. 🍻

Not really. The creation of the look starts with the raw conversion. All the camera provides is the charcoal sketch  before you start painting. Truth? There is nothing true in any photograph. Just ask Plato.
