looking for Q3 advice

as a favor to a friend getting married Sunday, I'm going to walk around the wedding and do some street style photography with my Q3. Wondering what AF settings would be best (including face/eye focus which is better than my old Q2 but nowhere as good as my Sony A7RV). Thanks!

You don’t say if this would be an indoor wedding or outdoor. Asheville can be very nice at this time of the year.

I would be inclined to use spot focus on specific individuals within groups and use half pressure on the shutter to lock focus and exposure. Avoid tracking. I would also look at multi-field exposure. I would set auto iso and a minimum shutter speed of 1/250 to be safe. OIS on auto. Aperture Priority. I’d also practice and try out different setting options before the event - say at a bar to feel comfortable with capturing some of what’s going on.

AFs and Spot or Field would be my recommendation. You can also try Manual focus which is actually really well working on Leica Q3. Face tend to jump from face to face, as well as anything resembling a face.

will the cam latch onto faces if I use field?

I would leave face detection off, especially If there’s more than one person in the frame. Also face detection works poorly in low light. I also wouldn’t use AFc because it kills battery life. 
I would use AFs and spot or the smallest field.

Face detection is not working very pleasant when multiple people are moving around. So I would select one of the more local autofocus modes.

I’d be nervous doing anything new when photographing a friend’s wedding, even if you’re just doing it as an extra on top of the main paid for photographer. If you have settings that worked for you doing street work with the Q2, I’d use them. That’s just me though.

If you are more comfortable with the A7Rv you mentioned, you should stick with that. When photographing a wedding, you should be able to handle your camera with closed eyes, so either you are already very familiar with what settings will work or you might want to go out before the wedding  and shoot some random street photos in big people groups, maybe look for some tourist hot spots and shoot there? The Sony A7Rv can be setup to go out of your way when shooting fast, the Q3 not so much.
