feley Posted November 21, 2007 Share #1  Posted November 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I took advantage of the Leica program wherein I returned my Digilux 2 with a defective sensor and paid $950 to get a new Digilux 3 instead.  I am satisfied with the Digilux 3, but wish I could buy back my original Digilux 2 after it is repaired. It was in mint condition and I prefer it as a camera to always carry in my car because of its small size.  I called Leica Repair in New Jersey and asked if it was possible for me to buy back the camera. They said no. But they didn’t have a firm answer as to what they would do with all the Digilux 2 cameras that they will undoubtedly get back. They mentioned something about their salesmen using them as demos. But that doesn’t make much sense to me.  I suggested that there might be others like myself that would be willing to buy back their original Digilux 2 after the sensor is replaced. Of course I would only be willing to pay a small fraction of my original $1800 cost because it has greatly depreciated due to newer technology.  Perhaps Leica would consider a offering a buy-back program if enough former owners of the Digilux 2 expressed interest in buying back their original camera. Your response to this message might get their attention. Let’s hear from you!  Frank Eley

earleygallery Posted November 21, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted November 21, 2007 I think the D2's returned as part ex's will be binned - surely the incentive is for Leica to sell you a D3 to shift more units and hopefully you'll buy additional lenses in due course. Â I can't imagine that they actually want to spend time repairing D2's.
marknorton Posted November 21, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted November 21, 2007 Leica are desperate to move this camera - D2 buy-back, customer loyalty promotions, free binoculars and the rest and an article in last weeks (UK) Amaatuer Photographer confirms our suspicion that the D3 and Panasonic stablemate are slow sellers. The D2 was not perfect but the lens was great and i have lots of images from it I like. Â Frank, your experience is a timely warning to others. just because your D2 has failed and needs a new sensor, don't to be too quick to jettison it. Â Leica's discount of the D3 to you replaces the cost of the free sensor replacement, so even if you could buy the camera back, you'd probably need to pay for the sensor replacement. rougewave Posted November 23, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted November 23, 2007 Thinking of selling my D2?? In excellent condition. Â Frank, if you do, let me know. I'd buy it for my son. I love this camera. It;s small, lite, easy to use & the glass is great. It makes user be patient, something few cameras do today. Even with all the problems, it still is one of my favorites. To me, the experience is very similar to thw M3 I used in the '70s. You have to imagine the picture more & use the sight lines only as a guide. Also, the window is placed (like the older, smaller M's) so that you can use both eyes to shoot. Anyway, if you deciede to cut loose, let me know. osscat Posted November 23, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted November 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I pondered long and hard over this offer and eventually swapped for the D3 - I have not regretted it. The camera felt like a proper camera (analogue) from the moment I started to use it. Â Recently a pang or two of nostalgia set in but drifted away when I thought of the 6 second write time for RAW files. Â I had some good images from the D2 but only within the first months, the sensor went off and I returned the camera after 12 months. It was replaced with a new one and the colour (UK) (color USA) was different. Â That one lasted longer and I struggled with colour balance right up to the end of the warranty. I sent it back after the front element scratched a granite post - sorry after a granite post scratched the front element. Â At first leica appeared to be going to repair it, including the lens, for free then they sent me the offer for the D3 - I had already waited two months by this time and there was no definite timescale for the repair. Â I needed a camera, I have the D3, like I said no regrets. Â osscat
