I’m not sure how but I have a few approaches.

1.  Avoid tourist areas, going where people express their personality as part of their everyday life 

2.  Expect the unexpected and, 

3.  Trust luck.  

4.  Engage with people, it’s surprising how many people I meet three or four years after our first encounter.

Hope that this gives some explanation.

Thank you.  The brick wall in the image is a somewhat veiled reference to where it was taken, Brick Lane is probably one of London’s most iconic places and has a varied and rich history.  There is one building that was a church for French Huguenots fleeing persecution, a Methodist church, a synagogue and is now a mosque.  Just taking a walk along its pavements is to drink in the colourful atmosphere, you’d love it.

Yes thanks a lot David! But like always there is a gap between theory and practice. I think the most important factor is how you interact with people. And looking at your photos you are doing it very well.

I completely agree with the above comments. This is another exceptional portrait showing not only your skill as a photographer but also your ability to connect with people you met on the street.
