For no particular reason I am thinking of upgrading to the Q3. The extra 13mp, although not ground shattering, is useful to me as I crop often. It also, I think, makes the 35mm available as a more solid option for cropping, and the 50mm for occasional work.

I was wondering, for Q3 owners, what you would say are the most noticeable improvements ?

1. The tilting led is quite useful ?

2. 8k video useful for cropping ?

3. is speed overall noticeable ?

4. Is AF, and face detect, improved ?

any other thing worth pointing out ?

I've owned Q, Q2 and now Q3

I find upgrade to Q3 worthwhile.

Most noticeable improvements:

- Added resolution for cropping. Having single 28mm fixed lens with highly usable 35mm crop and as you suggest 50mm for occasional work is a definite benefit

-While I admit that rear of Q2 is more pleasing to look at than Q3, the articulating screen is a significant upgrade particularly to those of us who value being able to compose a scene from different vantage points. The tilting screen helps a great deal.

- AF face detect is a huge improvement and instantly noticeable versus Q2. Don't agree with feedback that suggest otherwise. I suspect that the comparisons must be with Sony or Cannon and not Q2.

-Haven't noticed clear overall speed improvement. In fact I think startup may be slower, which is why when out shooting I let camera time out rather than turn on and off. New battery with 20 % added juice really helps.

-Wish Q3 had back button focus but that's no different than Q2 and Q. I use "partial" work around by setting top right programable button to AF lock. Not ideal but I prefer to relying on shutter button half press.

I use the tilt screen for candid street photos and it's priceless.. I got used to it from the X100V and now I don't think I can do without.

AF is not bad on the Q3 I don't know how far behind is the Q2 - if it's working for you than no reson to upgrade.

Other than that I don't think there is much difference.

I do a fair amount of low light photography.  Had the Q2 and didn't like the noise at and above 3200.  With the newer AI noise reduction software it may not be a problem for you, but pulling from the shadows while maintaining color fidelity on the Q3 is easier.  Also with the Q3 I have no problems with processing images where I shoot around two stops underexposed to keep my shutter speed up at times.

+1

Similar experience underexposing with Q3.

I enjoy tripod mounted long exposure work (a hackneyed genre according to many). I sold my Q2 after fervently hoping that I could accept the delays related to the non-switchable noise reduction, but eventually gave up. Being able to take images without being followed by an equal amount of “down time” was the catalyst for getting a Q3, and the tilting screen the icing on the cake. Only problem is that the Q3 cannot “see through” ND filters to anything like the same extent as my previous Fujis, but in that respect the Q3 is similar to quite a few otherwise competent cameras.

Having moved from a Q2 to a Q3 when the Q3 first came out my views are:

  • The tilt screen is fantastically useful for landscape work (which is my main interest) as well as for street (which I don't do very much).
  • The auto-focus is, I think, very much improved over the Q2 and works especially well for people photography (with a slight caveat if there are many people in the shot).

I don't do video so can't comment on that but, overall, for me the Q3 is a very significant improvement over the Q2 and I'm extremely happy with it (including the extra resolution). I have no issues with the start-up time (which I understand has bothered some others).

In passing, after photographing Iguaçu falls this morning in drenching spray I can also vouch for the weather-proofing. 😀
