Looking for a compact sling or small shoulder bag for short trips with an SL2 and 2 primes. That is relatively discrete and easy to assess. Should be as small as reasonably possible. Ideally with one of the lens attached but this is not necessary. The problem with most slings is that they are designed for one shoulder only. An exception is the nomadic  8l sling. I also like the way this bag opens, looks easy to get to gear and change lenses on the go. For shoulder bags, the thinktank retrospective 5 looks like it should just be big enough.
Anyone have experience with either bag and a similar setup?

Used the retrospective  7 for years, plenty of room and the canvas has aged beautifully, I still have it but now use the urban access 10 which enables you switch shoulders, necessitated by a clavicle fracture and fixation, which is more comfortable particularly if going to cycle at all.

A lot of interesting suggestions. Thanks everyone! I was unaware of most of these and have been busy looking them up!

Perhaps because l am lefty, my natural tendency is for a sling bag to be off my left hip, which rules out most of the suggestions. If I had to, I suppose I could learn to adjust. The alternative is a regular shoulder bag.

The thinktank urban access (8L) and Wandrd 6L sling look the most interesting to me. I like how the can be used on either shoulder.

@FlashGordonPhotography, how do you find the strap on the Wandrd? One report suggests that it difficult to adjust for a comfortable fit. Looks like it might be available locally, so I should be able to examine it.

Strap is easy to adjust. Really easy. It has a pull tab to tighten at the shoulder pad as well as over all lengthening tabs at both ends. The most comfortable sling I own (the least being the Peak Design). And I can swap between waist pack and sling in seconds.

And the strap is fully reversable so it wears perfectly on both sides. Takes maybe 15 seconds to swap directions.

I like the wandrd backpacks but they are bigger.

Im also a big fan of the domke satchels and ballistic bags

I also have two billingham satchels but those are not as discrete as the others.

I think need to take a closer look at some of the narrower domke bags. Some of these are quite deep and would fit the lens with the hood attached. Is that how people use them?

Some of Domke, the Ona rockaway recommend by @theseus79, Billingham Hadley Pro Digital recommended by @idusidusiand some others, are only 4 inches deep internally , the ona Berlin, recommend by @Sohail is only 3,5 inches deep internally.

The height of the SL2 is 4.21 and I often use the RRS bracket that adds another 1/4 in or so bringing the camera up to 4.5 in which seems a tight fit or is there enough give to make it fit?

thanks

The domke rugged satchel in medium is a great pick for leaving hoods on.  I have 4 of these in medium and large in brown.  They are also not expensive, and can fold flat to go inside luggage if needed.  They kind of wrap around you as a softer option.  No problem on widths or to carry with lenses mounted ready to go. One flap secured with Velcro.  One long pocket in front for a iPad and some extras.  Different width padded dividers to go inside.

As a left hander, I always use the Lowe Pro Passport on the left.  Works for me...

One lens on the body (hood reversed), t'other one alongside - with the separator in place.

I have to admit I dismissed it too quickly because I thought it was one sided only. Taking a closer look, it is actually a cool bag. Unfortunately, it seems to have been discontinued, none of the traditional places have it. There are some sources out of China (Aliexpress and Grandado) but I suspect these are likely knock offs.

What a bummer.  However, it might be worth going through the global LowePro site (where the bag is still listed) and check if anyone has old stock left...

Good luck!

A bag is very personal. I'm very happy with the https://billingham.co.uk/products/hadley-pro-2020-camera-bag_colour-navy-canvas-chocolate-leather

Good fit for the SL2+2 lenses, battery, charger, MacBook Air, weatherproof, and a luggage trolley strap (essential for me during business trips).

Good luck deciding, and fit your gear in the shop!

Best
