@Malabito and LocalHero1953 I as well have a sticky  play button on my SL 2. When I have some time where I can get by with just one body will have it serviced. Thankfully can work around this or just think back to the film days with no play button. 😀

After my post, I looked at mine and (carefully) took a thin pointy knife to the edges of the button. It cleaned out quite a lot of gunge that was barely visible. It is much better, though not as free as the other buttons. I suspect there's a bit of sweat in there as well. A soak in isopropyl alcohol would probably sort it - if I could be sure that's all it would do!

I encountered the same issue on my SL2. I used this contact cleaner with the spray tube attached. Shot it into the play button once on each of the four sides. One quick shot was all. The cleaner dries almost instantly on contact and it will not harm the plastic on the camera. I did this two months ago. Never had it stick since.

@incar—thanks for the tip will try this when back to USA. Buying a can of this stuff far cheaper than the postage sending camera off to Leica, lot quicker than waiting forever for camera to return as well.

Got my first "System Error" this weekend with my SL2. Completely out of the blue. Camera was on a tripod at the time and was barely moved. Turned it off, removed the battery, waited 5 min, put battery back in, waited another 5 min, turned on and it was fine for the rest of the weekend. Hope this was a one-off.

This weekend I got my second "system error" with my SL2S "Reporter," it happens when I put the new battery on charge and if I plug it in, a red screen appears. I reboot and it disappears. Yesterday I updated the firmware to Version 6, we will see if it will happen again (the battery is bpl06)

I first encountered the "System Error" on my Leica SL2 late last year. I tried many of the published fixes, which worked for a time, but a few months ago, I could not get around the System Error anymore. The camera became utterly unusable.

I sent it to Leica, NJ, for repair earlier this year. It was estimated to be back to me around mid-June. However, last month, I got the following message from Leica:

During the repair of your Leica product, the technician found that a
part required to fully repair your equipment to Leica standards is
currently out of stock.

Our colleagues and worldwide suppliers are working together to resolve
this issue as quickly as possible. However, this will most likely delay
the completion of the repair.

So, there's no telling how long it will be until I get the SL2 back from the repair...

Exactly the same message I received from them on 02/29/2024. The camera was sent back to me 06/04/2024. It was a failed shutter on my SL2-S. Of course this is just a data point, your wait time may be different.

Given the problems I've had recently, and the other cases reported, it might be useful to see how wide-spread this problem is and, if possible, to check on how old the cameras involved are.  If the responses to this poll are significant I plan to share it with Stefan Daniel so that A. Leica is aware of the scale of the issue, and B. to see if SL2 owners can have any reassurance regarding the cause of the problem, what remedy is available, and if it can be avoided in the future.

Hi:

I also would like to add my camera information:

Camera model SL2 serial ****9142

DATE of PURCHASE - 2022/12/24

DATE OF FAILURE - 2023/12/15

Error system: shutter stuck. At first, I could restart the camera, and it worked again, but after a while, it failed again, and there was nothing to do (batteries, SD cards, lenses...).

As stated above, I sent it to Leica earlier this year, and as they are missing parts and can't repair it, I am still waiting with no end in sight......

New Leica SL2.  Downloaded Fotos app on iPhone, then connected to camera.  Was told new firmware available (V 6.0 I believe).  Downloaded, waited while it tried to install, only to get a "System Error" message at end of install process.  Every time I touched the screen, it tired to install again, but nothing ever happened.  Removed the battery and rebooted - still running the prior version - 5.something.   Done with newly charged battery, and no lens attached.

Just retry the same up date method?   Or is there a better way to install the latest firmware?

Thanks in advance.

Hopefully this will be helpful.

SL2 purchase date: 10/30/2020

Manufacture date: 7/7/20

serial number: 5***209

i have over 10,000 shots on the SL2 and i haven't had an error other than one lockup. Removed the battery and it was happy again. i probably just jinxed myself, but so far it has been perfect. I will say i have never bonded with a camera like i have with my SL2. the customization of the menus, buttons, the elegance of the work flow, incredible quality of the images, lenses, EVF! I shot on an M10 for several years and it just didn't work for me with my vision (astigmatism), even with the evf. The EVF on the SL2 is amazing!

My first SL2-S was a new in box in 2021.  As I began to set up the menu with the date and time I got a SYSTEM ERROR before I even took the first image.  Returned and received the second SL2-S and it was fine. The card I used for both cameras was a SanDisk.

Regrettably adding one of mine to the pile:

Purchased March 2021, System error November 2024, Serial No. 5629397 ...btw all these redacted serials people are posting aren't helpful trying to narrow it down to a batch. I own serial numbers that begin with 562 and 563, for example.

Anyway, I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner, I'd estimate I've put about 400K actuations on this shutter in full-time wedding photography usage.

It's out of warranty, so I'll update with repair costs when that process resolves.

All that to say, I still love these cameras so much that I'll happily buy another if that's the end result.

Ok so after leaving the battery out for an hour-ish and taking off the lens and taking out the cards, it appears to be working again. Will update after a shoot today.

EDIT: NVM still misbehaving.

it won't get better 😞

but soon you can get it fixed in the US and don't have to wait for the slow Germans.

insider tip, get an LSI membership and you get 15% off the repairs.

Didn't realize they're doing these repairs in the USA! That's great, where did you find this out? Just wanting to keep up to date, haha not challenging your intel.

And just joined LHSA, thanks!
