Hello, I have this late fat Elmar serial 135984 that for some reason has an extra ring under the second (aluminium) knurled ring. It goes without saying that this lens does not reach infinity. What may have the purpose for such a strange hack have been?

maybe modded to achieve closer focus?

This is quite possible... I wonder if it could have been done for some repro usage without RF coupling... as a do it yourself modification, before that Leitz listed the several devices and kits for this purpose

That ring feels like it’s welded or glued on the aluminium ring that would have the thread on. The brass part below that spins freely so not sure what happened to this poor lens

I don’t think any part of the original lens was aluminium, only brass. My one looks like this, the widest knurled ring is flush with the top of the focussing mount.

Now that I have removed the lenshead from the focussing mount the lenshead base does look more like aluminium than brass?
