Hello got som lust after a Leica CM again. I bought it last time 25 years ago when they were at the end of manufacturing.

It broke and i send it in to Leica. I got a total refund back a few weeks later and a letter which said that exactly the part i needed has been forbidden in EU.

So the questions is? Is it fixable these days?? Or should i stay away from CM ?

Time flies but I'm pretty sure it wasn't 25 years ago that you bought a Leica CM. Are you sure you don't mean a Leica Minilux, the predecessor camera, and notorious for the dreaded E02 failure?

I don't remember the CM being similarly prone to failure but I think the advice to avoid one is probably wise – at least at the prices that people ask for these old luxury film compacts.

I had to check the Wiki. Production year was 2004-2006 I guess  it was 2006 I tried to buy one, I don't think I even ran one film through it. Yeah the prices is ridiculous given that the can't be repaired. So I guess it will be a Ricoh for me.

I have tried some of of the pricey  compacts. CONTAX T3, Minilux, etc. I stick with the Rollei AFM 35, aka Fuji Klasse. Great lens, great AF, great exposure.

For me the best compact AF Camera.

But otherwise my Rollei 35s never let me down and surprise me everytime I use them.

I've been using many compacts over the past years, the top choices for me are (not surprisingly) the Contax T2 and T3, Rollei AFM 35, Leica Minilux and CM.

If it's purely about image quality, the Leica Minilux and CM have a superb lens - very detailed and clean, but gentle and smooth. Probably one of my all time favourite lenses and I have been thinking about having one convertet to M mount. The downside are the handling is not that great, specially the viewfinder of the Minilux.

The Zeiss lenses of the Contax are also great but harsher in contrast, a lot of punch but a bit aggressive for my taste. The Viewfinder in the T2 is just lovely though.

The Rollei AFM is a great allrounder with a very good lens and I like the handling the best.

The Yashica T4/T5 is also a lot of fun, makes great images but a bit less clean than the above models.

I've always been worried about one of them failing but then decided that any digital camera will land on the landfill in 10 years time anyway, so if my Minilux holds up for 5 years I'm happy (on top, there's quite a few places that offer repair again now)

My DMR from 2005 is not in a landfill, nor my Digilux2 from 2004. You’ll find active user groups of both cameras on the forum, as of the M8 from 2006. They even command respectable prices on the used market.

sure, there are exceptions - but a 5D MKIII for example sold for 3500EUR 10 years ago (which is probably about 4500 in todays money) and is worth about 500EUR by now.

my Leica CM is worth twice as much as when I bought it, but even if it would break and I couldn't repair it, I've got the feeling that I've got enough good moments and nice pictures from it that it would have been worth the risk.

Leica CM and Minilux can still be fixed by few people (there is a guy in Portugal and a company in Poland I know they fix it) but overall, if you looking for a point and shoot I'd strongly recommend a Contax T2 - the viewfinder is much more usable and overall much more sturdy. If you are patient, you can get one for around 6-700 Eur.
Ricoh GR also a great choice but the lens is much wider (28mm, vs 38mm in the T2 and 40mm in the CM).
