msendin Posted October 17, 2023 Share #4 Posted October 17, 2023 Very nice lens. Simple, well made, light, very good overall performance. Externally nearly identical to the 85mm f1.8 that is also a great lens. Tested the Panasonic 50mm f1.4, that is even better but for me weight is important and it is 300gr. vs 900gr. Will Leica 50mm f2 non apo be better? We will see. It might if it has something different but if so, will it justify to be 4 times more expensive? There are better 50mm lenses but this Panasonic has an excelent value for money.

Really? I have the legendary 50/1.4 SL. If you have the images to substantiate that claim, I'd love to see them.
J_Mulligan Posted October 17, 2023 Share #6 Posted October 17, 2023 I too have the Pani 50/1.8 and recommend it for the price. It seems to be the smallest normal AF lens for L mount. It's light, quick and sharp. And cheap. And weather sealed I think. I prefer the look of images made with my M lenses on the SL2, but often the Panasonic is just what you need for convenience. I sometimes use the Sigma 50mm Art in EF mount adapted to the SL2. It makes nice looking images, but it's so big and heavy on the adapter, awkward. I also have a 50mm Summicron R which really has a nice look, but no AF and it's weird ergonomics on the adapter aren't too appealing. I wish there was an L mount AF 50mm that was the size of the 50 Summicron R minus the adapter.

Now there's another 50mm in the never-empty B&H shopping cart.

Mostly a walking around lens: street, architecture, some candid family shots and travel. Any advice for a Leica noobie would be greatly appreciated. SJH Posted April 18 Share #11 Posted April 18 Personally I’d go for the Sigma 50mm DG DN F2 L mount over the Panasonic, better build (metal), aperture ring and slightly better optics (but marginal). Sigma’s range seem more like an ‘M lens for L mount AF’ than the Panasonics, so suit the SL range better in my view. I have the SL APO’s for my SL3 but if I’m travelling or want something lighter I just take one of the little Sigma’s, they’re that good.
jaapv Posted April 18 Share #12 Posted April 18 I have the Leica 50 2.0 (clone of the Panasonic 1.8) which is metal) and the sister lens Panasonic 34/1.8 and I prefer the build of the Panasonic as it is made of composite. The lens feels as robust and runs as smoothly as the Leica but is significantly lighter. One advantage of composite is that it does not show wear like metal does. The Leica lens shows silver edges and spots, the Panasonic is like new.
satijntje Posted April 18 Share #13 Posted April 18 One more vote for the 50mm f1.8 Panasonic. My most used lens on my SL3-s!
NightPix Posted April 18 Share #14 Posted April 18 The SL2 itself is already a bit heavy, so if the weight is an issue, the Pano 50 1.8 is a great choice. Walking all day with a heavy kit can get tiresome. I picked up the Leica version of the 50 and 35 but have wished for the lighter Panos more than once at the end of a long day.

I am able to get the Sigma 50mm f2 dg dn for about the same price as a Leica Summicron R 50mm f2 and adapter (obviously not the Leica adapter)… any thoughts? I don’t have the R cron but I do have the M cron 50 (non-APO) and I like the images from it a lot on the SL2. Sometimes I get lazy (esp when I’m chasing grandkids) and just want AF. The Leica/Pano 50 is superb (sharp, fast focus, gorgeous colors) and I miss fewer shots than with the M. If I have lots of time the M cron is fantastic. I’m not a pixel peeper so I can’t comment on the images in that regard.

jaapv Posted April 18 Share #19 Posted April 18 I have the Summicron 50 SL and am more than happy; there is a thread in the L lens forum. But the only reason I bought it over the Panasonic version is that I got an excellent deal on it.
