Hi

I’m looking for a filter for my Summitar. I wondered if this would fit ? It seems to have the correct tapered design but I’m not sure that 36mm is correct ?

Yes, it looks to be the same as one I have for my Summitar 50mm / f2, same markings etc etc.

There is also this adapter ring that allows you to use a regular 39mm filter on the Summitar too.   https://www.ebay.fr/itm/145050051016

Even if the adapter for 39mm filter works well, it‘s a shame to use it on a Summitar. The Summitar was the only lens ever where the filter - which is unique for this lens (btw: it had a 36.5mm thread, not 36mm as stated in the add) - perfectly fits as if the filter was part of the lens. So why use a Summitar (there are better lenses on the market…) and compromise on its very special design with regards to filters? The original Summitar filters are not rare on the second hand market and not more expensive than 39mm filters by Leitz.

(my dogmatic rant should not be taken too serious…)

Looks like a Summitar filter to me. I wouldn't call it 'E36', which suggests a conventional untapered filter (if they even exist in that size). For me, the reasons to use current filters with an adapter instead are modern multicoated glass (I assume the vintage filters are uncoated) and compatibility with other lenses - no need to buy a rare Summitar polariser when I've already got one in E39, etc. It's worth getting hold of an original Leitz SNHOO adapter if you can find one - they don't turn up that often, but when they do they tend not to be ridiculously expensive (as for example the SOOGZ is now becoming), probably because the third party adapters exist.

Thanks. You have the yellow filter ? Just out of interest did you find you had to adjust your exposure at all with this mounted ?

The filter "0" is a bright yellow filter which almost has no effect on exposure - and almost no effect you are looking for when you use a filter. The darker filter "1" needs perhaps one stop more, though modern film has enough latitude not to worry too much about it.

That’s great because the main effect I’m looking for is protecting the front glass from scratches!!!

Upps... A colored filter - and be it as slightly colored as the "0"-filter is no good solution for protecting the front element. With this filter you will not be able to make proper colored photos, they'll all have a yellow tint. There should be loads of UV-filters for the Summitar on the second hand market, you'd better look for one.

Thanks but can you explain why this filter isn’t a good temporary solution for protecting the front element ? Surely any filter offers the same kind of front element protection?

I shoot black and white 90% of the time. Wanted a quick solution as I’m quite clumsy and on EBay and eBay Kleinanzeige the limited number of Summitar UV filters were extremely expensive. This original Leitz filter wasn’t.
As a long term solution I have also ordered a copy of the SNHOO adapter but that will take some time to arrive.
