Daniel,

my s/h 28 Elmarit shows the same. In my case, CarstenW gave some time ago an interesting explantion.

To unscrew the hood it must be pressed against the lens, if not, people try to rotate with too much force and twist the hood and the lens front barrel.

After this happened they twisted back to screw the loosened parts and overrotate. Bingo, the alignment is gone and the hood has no horizontal alignment.

( my Elmarit has the two knobs to fix the hood or the lenscap.

If it is a brand new lens, you can blame assembly error/tolerance.

With used lenses, the users tend to grab the lens by the hood to mount and unmount it and the aliment gets twisted off as described in the post above.

With either of these problems, Leica can straighten it out.

To mount and dismount the Leica M and R lenses, it is best to grip them by the knurled section just by the lens mount.

Well, I did in fact, but ever soOoo slightly, attempt to ensure the lens was fully rotated so I hope I didn't induce any damaging force.

On the 28 ( 39 mm filter diameter)I use the Elmar-M 2.8/50 lenshood. It is round, metal, miniscule and screws in. And surprisingly it does not vignette on the M8, even with the IR filter in between.

I mounted the 28-cron’ with lens hood and I noticed the lens hood is not aligned “even” with the camera body. I reinstalled the lens but it’s still slightly off. Is this normal, or am I already screwing up?

Regards,

Daniel, just checked my own original lenshood, but isn't yours a clip-on model ?

Otherwise I can't think of any reason why you should have to rotate that lenshood

Just straight-on and straight-off with the white dots aligned.

I'd have to say I felt the same way about my lens hood on the 28 Cron. But after time I noticed the hood is infact square on the lens and the way the hood tapers gives the optical illusion that it is twisted slightly.

Does the white dot on the lens line up with the focussing index mark? It should do.

The lens hood attaches to a part of the lens called the accessory carrier which is held in place by 3 set screws and if the carrier is incorrectly mounted, the lens hood will not go on straight.

My 24mm Elmarit has the same problem but it is so minor that not even this perfectionist has got his screwdrivers out...

The white dots are aligned and yet, the hood is tilted down to the right when mounted. Granted, it doesn’t seem too bad although it's not what one would anticipate seeing. I suppose it is perhaps an illusion but to me, it's looks strange never the less. On a hard level surface, the height of the lens hood to table surface is: 8/32 vs. 14/32 from lower corner to corner. To me, this quite the optical illusion.

The accessory carrier that Mark mentioned becomes loose on my 28 Summicron about every 2 or 3 weeks allowing the hood to rotate ever so slightly out of alignment. In my case I can see and feel play if I grasp the hood and rotate gently. I use a tiny screwdriver to tighten up the three screws and it is OK until the next time...It doesn't seem to cause any problems and I won't send it back for a fix.

This does in fact appear to be the case, and based on your words, I will live with it for now. So, if one wanted total perfection, the end user could apply the adjustment, or is this something better left to NJ?
