wattleseed Posted September 17, 2023 Share #1 Posted September 17, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone here ordered the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max? I understand that the phones are yet to ship, but I'm curious to hear how the FOTOS App connection will work with these new phones given the transition to a 10 Gbps USB-C connector. Previously the Leica FOTOS Cable + Apple MFi was required for a connection - will the new phones connect with any old USB-C cable + MFi? If anyone has a new phone coming, please let me know! jgeenen Posted September 17, 2023 Share #3 Posted September 17, 2023 One usually doesn't need a Thunderbolt4 cable for USB transmission. A generic USB-C cable certified for 10 Gbps will do the same. Obviously I haven't been able to test on an iPhone 15 (Apple is always good for surprises).
jakontil Posted September 17, 2023 Share #4 Posted September 17, 2023 I thought the 15 pro dont support thunderbolt, besides m11 is notoriously known slow when using a thunderbolt cable, the usb c. 3.1 gen 1 or may be 3.2 is more preferred when connected to pc but i might be wrong
kyono Posted September 17, 2023 Share #5 Posted September 17, 2023 1. iPhone 15 Pro models support USB 3 Gen 2(10Gbps). 2. The Leica M11 model supports USB 3.1 Gen 1(5Gbps). Therefore, you can purchase a USB C to C cable that supports USB 3.1 Gen 1.
marchyman Posted September 17, 2023 Share #6 Posted September 17, 2023 Yeah, a 3 meter cable that supports thunderbolt 4 is going to be expensive. It's also over kill for most things. I'd guess its what you'd buy when you want to hook your 5K monitor up to a mac mini or mac studio hidden away somewhere in for product demonstrations. I suppose it could be useful for tethered shooting, but you don't need Thunderbolt 4 for that. USB 3.2 gen 2 (protocol) USB-C (physical connector) cables can be had for lots less money. $16.99 on amazon if you need a 3 meter cable. I use the cable that came with my iPad pro (USB-C connectors on both ends) when I want to connect my M11 to my iPad. For my use case (yours might be different) a 3 meter cable would only get in the way.
Photoworks Posted September 18, 2023 Share #7 Posted September 18, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think it will be dependent on the software, not the cable. there is no benefit to using the T4 cable, Apple limits all UCB-C connections to 10gbits on the PC side, you can get 20-40 over USB-C Just like on the iPad many cables could work, but the FOTOS app doesn't. I can say that because I have tested a pail of cables. very few work with the FOTOS app, but all of them worked for Capture one for iPad
Qwertynm Posted September 18, 2023 Share #8 Posted September 18, 2023 Your SD card in the camera and some controller will probably bottle neck the connection. The fastest UHS-II V90 cards are capable of approx. 300MB/s read speeds = 2.4Gbps. So I wouldn't worry about the fastest cable. The FOTOS App will behave exactly as it did for iPad Pro M1 users as this connection already allows M11/Q3 cameras to be connected to the FOTOS App. Just make sure you choose Mass Storage in the camera settings.
Photoworks Posted September 22, 2023 Share #9 Posted September 22, 2023 The new iPhone 15 is out and usb-c works the same as the iPad pro connection. the cable that comes with the phone works, and very few cables work in FOTOS app. In Capture one for IOS the 33ft cable and many others work just fine. It looks like the supplied cable is only good for usb 2 speeds. I mean c’mon Apple! I guess they are saving usb 3 cables for the iPhone 16 pro which will support usb 4 speeds. Rinse repeat… Edited September 22, 2023 by Kwesi
rich_ Posted September 22, 2023 Share #11 Posted September 22, 2023 (edited) its not helped by how the iphone 15 supports usb 2 speeds over a USB C connector. The iphone 15 pro is the one with the USB 3 speeds similar to iPad pros Edited September 22, 2023 by rich_

I guess they are saving usb 3 cables for the iPhone 16 pro which will support usb 4 speeds. Rinse repeat… Not exactly. apple favorites 10gbs speed over USB-c. if you want faster in the apple would you need Tundebolt with 20-40Gbs , what is not magically happening on the iPad or iPhone. But the speed limitation is coming from the FOTOS app and probably the protocol they use. This is proven by using the same cable in a different app, the 100MB raw+jpg takes 5 sec. Also, the 10Gbs speed is enough to transfer at 1000MB's, in the video app you can shoot Prores files into a connected SSD. Pretty great if you ask me.
Photoworks Posted September 24, 2023 Share #13 Posted September 24, 2023 I did a little more research, the cable that comes with the iPhone 15 Pro is USB-C 2.0, which means the speeds are limited to that. You just need to buy a different cable.

From page 83 of my version of the manual: VIA USB CABLE OR “LEICA FOTOS CABLE” The camera supports multiple transfer options ( PTP or Apple MFi ). This requires an appropriate camera setting. Factory setting: Apple MFi There is no mass storage option for the M11.

I only have a Q3 that has the option to choose mass storage and therefore I assumed the M11 would be the same.
Kiwimac Posted October 1, 2023 Share #16 Posted October 1, 2023 I have tried connecting my 15 Pro Max to the M11 using a high quality USB-C 3.1 cable (not Apple but very expensive Kevlar armoured, metal plugs etc etc) and it does nothing in Fotos at all when set to MFI. Since I want it to interface with Fotos as it would have done using the Lightning cable that came with the camera, if I set it to PTP will it do that or not? rramesh Posted October 12, 2023 Share #17 Posted October 12, 2023 Loving my iPhone 15 Pro. I am now questioning if I might still need an M for those business trips.
James Webb Posted November 17, 2023 Share #18 Posted November 17, 2023 I bought iPad Air 15 and it has the same cable like iPhone 15 Pro Max. Loving the charging speed.
Steadimann Posted November 17, 2023 Share #19 Posted November 17, 2023 I have M11-P and 15 Pro max. Camera connects to Fotos instantly via USB 3 cable, but transfer is slow, seems to be USB 2. The same cable though does not work with PC, computer beeps when I connect the camera, but it's not displayed in Lightroom. When using Thunderbolt 4 cable - all works on computer, but with Iphone - not.
marchyman Posted November 17, 2023 Share #20 Posted November 17, 2023 The Pro max should support transfers up to 10 Gb/s. But NOT when using the cable that came with the phone according to this article: https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/iphone-15-pro-usb-c-10gbps-transfer-speeds/ Quote The USB-C cable included with iPhone 15 Pro models supports USB 2 speeds, so a higher-spec cable is needed for faster speeds. One such cable is Apple's Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable, which is now available in a shorter one-meter size for $69. That statement makes me wonder if the M11 can support Thunderbolt 4? Perhaps not. I'd try something like a USB 3.1 Gen 2 cable, sometimes called SuperSpeed+.
