gtway2020 Posted September 8, 2023 Share #1 Posted September 8, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently purchased the fuji EF-X20 to go with my Leica Q. But I couldn't make it work. Did all the troubleshooting I could think of, flash itself worked fine on other cameras. I can only imagine that the connection between the two doesn't match ? (the flash slides in, but will not lock in) I asked a Youtuber who used this flash on his Leica. He couldn't speak for Leica Q cuz he uses Leica Q2. Does the Q and Q2 have different flash shoe configurations....? Is there any adaptor I can use? Anyone can shine some light on this.? ~ It's such a lovely flash that looks great with Leica Q. :(( Thanks!
Advertisement Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Hi gtway2020, Take a look here Fuji EF-X20 for Leica Q. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted September 8, 2023 Share #2 Posted September 8, 2023 Welcome. Of course it does not work. Leica flashes follow the Leica protocol, Fuji the Fuji one, Nikon the Nikon one, etc. Only Leica flashes on Leica cameras or general ones on automatic or manual. Don’t ever believe everything on YouTube.
pcgarner Posted September 8, 2023 Share #3 Posted September 8, 2023 Jaap's correct. I own an EF X20 and it does not work on my Q2M. To my disappointment.
jdlaing Posted September 8, 2023 Share #4 Posted September 8, 2023 If memory serves the only ones that were cross compatible were some Olympus flashes.
jaapv Posted September 8, 2023 Share #5 Posted September 8, 2023 On Panaleicas IIRC.

The flash connection is very similar between Olympus and Leica. For example the Olympus VF-2 electronic viewfinder works perfectly on the X-Vario. jaapv Posted September 9, 2023 Share #9 Posted September 9, 2023 Of course it works on auto or manual, most flashes do, but it does not work TTL, nor will the camera recognize it.
nicci78 Posted September 9, 2023 Share #10 Posted September 9, 2023 EF-X20 is one of the worst flash I ever encountered. Its extremely slow recycling time combined with low power makes it almost useless in real world. I tried it on the Q at the time of BHT video. But it was so frustrating to use. Leica OG SF24D is way better : faster recycling, better illumination, TTL with made in Germany Leicas.
Qwertynm Posted September 9, 2023 Share #11 Posted September 9, 2023 what you are saying is that the fuji flash doesn’t physically mount to your Q? Can you use it in manual mode? Expose for the background and use the flash as a filler is what I‘d expect it to do. This shouldn’t be too hard to do manually or am I oversimplifying this? I don’t have any experience with using flash in TTL and also considered the fuji ef-x20 because of its size. Maybe this is an alternative although a bit bigger: https://www.lightpixlabs.com/pages/q20ii
cong Posted October 20, 2024 Share #12 Posted October 20, 2024 Hi, I'm using Leica Q and just bought Fuji EF-X20 flash, but I can't use the flash. Can you share how to use Fuji EF-X20 flash on Leica Q? Thanks
jaapv Posted October 20, 2024 Share #13 Posted October 20, 2024 Not. Leica cameras use the Leica Flash protocol, Fuji cameras the Fuji one. Leica branded flashes and some Godox models work, or any flash on manual only. You’ll have to return the flash and buy a suitable one. Take care that some flashes sold as “for Leica” are actually meant for Panaleicas and follow the Panasonic protocol. For a Q I’d recommend the SF 40. https://leicacamerausa.com/leica-sf-40-flash.html
