Does anybody use the original Leica M adapter L on the Lumix S5? The Leica adapter contains electronics and can transfer lens information from 6-bit coded lenses to the camera. Does the Lumix S5 also gets information from the adapter, or is there only a data transfer to the Leica SL cameras? It would be fine, if at least the focal length is transferred to the S5, so that I can find the information in the meta data and that the information is used for the image stabilizer. If there is no transfer of data to the S5 with the Leica adapter, I can also use a cheaper adapter from Novoflex.

Regards

Michael

I try an original Leica M to L adapter on my S5II, if the S5 is set to S or C it comes up with Switch to MF message nothing else. Using Novoflex adapter will give you lot more choices i.e. Focal Length, I.S. Area, Lens Name. In Capture one Metadata it displays only Focal length of the lens used to take photo.

The  < Novoflex adapter >  is just a mechanical adapter.  As the information describe:
-no information transmission between the lens and the camera

So NO lens name.

But aside from "electronic" limitations by lens information,  you can use many options of the camera itself for taking proper images.
For proper Focal Length information by EXIF.  As soon as you power up the camera, you do get a menu to fill-in the focal length manually.
(Or just check by the last set focal length information).

By these manual set focal length, also image stabilisation is set properly in accordance to the used (and set) focal length.

If you set shutter speed and aperture manually within a certain range, but e.g. do use "Auto ISO".
A kind of semi  Auto exposure mode can be used, as the ISO is set by the found light conditions as measured by the camera.
(Very handy to make use of Auto ISO).

All other focusing and exposure helping tools can be used.
As e.g. focus peaking, and "zebra" high light areas for exposure.

All these options can be used by any mechanical adapter (without electronic data transmission between the lens and the camera).
Using myself an  M42  and  Nikon lens adapter  to L-mount.
And using e.g. an old  "Industar 50-2 lens"  by M42 adapter, and older Voigtländer Nikon mount SL lenses
and have all the above mentioned options.

As for Leica M lenses.  Very handy can be the  < 7artisans 7 artisans LM Close focus Adapter Ring >
(check the last item option  ---->  Color:  LM to L mount gold)
as it do have an extra helicoid for shorten the most close focus distance of a lens.
See   < YouTube example >   and connected  < to Lumix S5 >

Thank you for your detailed information. If I use a manual adapter like the one from Novoflex, there is no information about the focal length in the EXIF data, even if I define the focal length when turning on the camera. The S5 is using the focal length information just for the image stabilizer, but will not write the focal length into the EXIF data. That's why I asked if the Leica adapter is doing so at the S5.

I checked again several images, using a manual lens with a manual adapter.
And you are right.  Seems no EXIF data within files when using manuals lenses / adapters.
Apologise for my mistake.

I confused it with my older Nikon DSLR camera, where there is a similar function to enter the focal length (and maximum F-stop).
In that case it also sets these values within the EXIF.     (Information Nikon).

Well, this might be an idea / suggestion to send in to Panasonic, to change the firmware at this point.
When entering the focal length manually (for proper image stabilizer), the same value should be used within the EXIF info.

There is an adapter available from TTArtisan for Sony E and Nikon Z mount. It gives the info from the 6bit M lense encoding to the camera:

M-E 6bit Adapter | TTArtisan (tt-artisan.de)

Any experience on this adapter?

I’ve used the 6-bit TTArtisan adapter on a few Sony bodies. It reads the 6-bit code and transfers just the focal length. You can also manually set the focal length with a thumb dial. It doesn’t transfer aperture info, for that you need to shoot in aperture priority mode, manually choose the aperture on the lens, and select/match the aperture in the camera to get a proper exposure with auto ISO. Overall, it sort of works.

S5ii, Summilux 24 M and Leica adapter.
I have yet to look at the full EXIF but it is clear that the camera recognizes the lens and records it
