69xchange Posted August 29, 2023 Share #1  Posted August 29, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just received my brand new M6 (production date May 2023) and it’s rewind crank is a bit hard to rewind and after rewinding a bit and releasing the crank, it unravels/unspools. From my understanding, shouldn’t there be a clutch disk that stops this from happening? Can anyone with a reissue M6 confirm that their M6 clutch mechanism actually works?  Paging @Huss

Huss Posted August 30, 2023 Share #2 Â Posted August 30, 2023 No, that type of wind mechanism unravels if you let go. Â Same on my M7s as my 2022 M6. Â The only Leica that did it right was the M5 - it is ratcheted so if you let go, it stays put. 1

Vlad Soare Posted August 30, 2023 Share #4 Â Posted August 30, 2023 How come the M-A and MP don't do this? Don't they have the same mechanism, just with a knob instead of a crank?

The force the film applies to the spool isn't that strong.

There is a friction 'clutch' but I think it's possible because the shaft is straight. The M6 has a universal joint in the shaft and any increased resistance may cause too much drag, besides which it's easier to keep hold of the M6 style crank to stop the film unwinding.
