Fate of Sean's quick adjust for ISO and exposure comp???

Any of you "connected" folks hear anything more about the idea tossed around here and described in one of Sean's articles re using the arrow keys on the M8 for quick adjust of ISO and exp. comp., maybe enabled by the PROTECT button, without having to deal with menus - where light changes quickly these would be a real help.

I know the JPEG shooters also wanted white balance and maybe contrast also, that would be more cumbersome but could be done the way the Digilux 2 did it, with up to 4 choices for quick adjust parameters. It means another button press to get to the one you want, however.

A year in, and the only real functional enhancements to the firmware we have seen have been the support of IR filters (and the WATE focal length selection menu) and the support for the new Summarit lenses. The rest has been bug fixing and fine tuning, functional and cosmetic.

Someone reading the manual which came with their camera will find little changed.

Hi Steve,

I can't discuss the details but I'm surprised that those improvements aren't yet in the production firmware. It's one of several features that I, again for reasons I can't discuss, am surprised are not yet available to owners. Those who would value that new design may want to e-mail Leica and remind them that it is still a feature that owners, and prospective owners, want. The, polite, squeeky wheels might get the grease. Several hundred polite e-mails reminding Leica of the importance of certain features won't hurt.

Cheers,

Sean

And that, my friend, is exactly the point. If the camera varied from the printed manual it would throw Leica into a tizzy I'm sure. Because, according to them, the users are dumbs***s who can't be trusted to change lenses in a menu let alone figuring out a changed up scollwheel system. I doubt it'll ever happen for this very reason alone, no matter how many pleas are made. It's the German way - pragmatic and very very conservative/cautious.

Not sure if this is what you mean but here's how I skip a click to change ISO:

1. Leave the ISO as the default or last setting when closing the SET button. If you want something other than ISO to go to quickly these next few steps work the same but ISO is about the only thing I change. In other words if you want to do a quick change on WHite Balance or profile or one of the other submenus in the SET, that submenu item needs to be the last one when SET is closed.

2. In sort of a single motion <hold the SET button and click once the UP or DOWN arrow and then release the SET button>. This will open the menu already with the ISO submenu open (aka- you are already at the 160-2500 options all in one motion).

3. then click again UP or DOWN arrow to choose desired ISO options

4. click the SET button to close the submenu

5. half press shutter release to close down menu to black LCD (menu off)

To note, in step 2 above the left/rt arrow or wheel will also work to get you in the submenu immediatley but you'll still need to switch to UP/DOWN to select the various ISO settings. I hope that helps. It technically doesnt' save much of a step but because a few clicks are in one motion (and takes you into the submenu) it's certainly quicker.

Sean-

I'd be happy to send a polite squeak. To whom and at what address do you suggest we send this polite note? I am always polite with people who have sold me $24,000 in gear and have not followed through with support.

Seriously, provide a contact person for this.

Walt

Sean - also very happy to send a polite email to Leica - and I'll still be gently lobbying for the quiet feature - a propos of which, still also interested if you, Mark Norton, anyone reckons it even can be done.

Using another method like described above would require these buttons to wake the camera or you would have to press the shutter release first to wake it.

I may be missing something, but in the current firmware, if the camera is awake and the iso was the last used set item, it requires:

1-press set button twice

2-scroll to the iso

3-press set button

I can do the above steps in two or three seconds.

What does Seans method improve upon?

Not sure but I THINK it dedicates one button to ISO. So you press and hold this button then spin the wheel, or press the arrow buttons, and then release the dedicated button and BAM the ISO is changed.

At least that is what I would want. You could even leave this button as it's default if you first pressed the play button. So the Info button could be the instant ISO change button but would still function as the info button when reviewing images.

That's what I would want and I think what I had read Sean Reid describe in another thread or review, but he could clarify here. Something like having the option to set the PROTECT button as a shortcut button (so as long as you didn't have an image in PLAY mode). With LCD "off" you could hold down PROTECT (as assigned to ISO, WB or whatever you set it to from one of the submenu options) and rotate wheel or arrows to instantly set the ISO then release PROTECT button to set.

One would think that someone in Solms is assigned to monitor the discussions on this list and take the requests, ideas and compaints back to their meetings. If they don't and require emails, that's pretty sad.

Hi Rob,

See my first M8 review.

It's way beyond that actually. Leica knows about this idea from direct, and extended, discussions with me since August of 2006. I can't get into more details than that but I will find an e-mail address, for people to contact, if they feel this improvement is important to them.

... Polite...because it almost always gets one further (IMHO). I'll check to see which address would be best. Sean

Sean, I can understand that it might be difficult for you to release an email address that you use to get to Leica.

How 'bout we start a(nother) thread on this subject and you bring that thread to the attention of your contact(s)?

That's a great idea. Are you interested in starting a survey thread? I'll paraphrase my proposed firmware revision (from that first M8 review) for the forum so that you can insert it. I can then send a link to Leica engineers, management, etc.
