Vuescan - Thoughts?

I didn't have much choice, when I "updated" to Vista, I found my Canoscan FS4000 software would not work, and Canon did not have an updated driver. Nor were they interested in the problem!!

It has been a steep learning curve, but I'm getting there, and on balance I would say that VueScan is much better than the original sofware. It also lets the scanner do things it couldn't do before,i.e. multiple passes.

Stefan- I was confused, (as usual). I didn't realize the file was a vuescan document that could be loaded directly, I was expecting a text document. I never saved or loaded settings before. So, I had the file, of course couldn't expand it, and it's now loaded into Vuescan. I greatly appreciate your kind efforts. best.... Peter

Hi Peter,

Hope it works for you. In case you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Best regards,

Hello!

I'm doing my batshscans in "everything turned of" mode, adjustments (if needed) is done in PH.

The result is exelent.

The scanner is Nikon ES 5000 with the slidefeeder.

Is there any reason to switch to Vuescan?

(This is the same workflow as Hbl/Imacom Flextightscanner with the slidefeeder)

Thanks

Ted

No matter the scanner you are using, the scanning software included are generally not satisfying especially because of the poor ergonomic they provide.

Vuescan isn't really an exception.

When you first start it, it seems a bit amateurish, awkward, and as difficult as the others (Silverfast and co)...

BUT the main feature is that Vuescan gives you the possibility to get RAW data from your scanner.

You get a DNG file that you can process in Photoshop, Lightroom, etc... exactly like an M8 file.

No matter your photos are underexposed, overexposed, too soft, etc...

No more fastidious tweaking with small previews, you just get what's the real potential of your film and then you "develop" it with the appropriate tool.

That's definitely the reason to switch !

Any other opinion ?

Cheers

Well I've now got the scanner, and intstalled Vuescan, and am generally very happy with both. However I have, what I'm sure, is a really simple question - If I scan a neg as a RAW file, how do I open in PS - I've tried with Camera Raw, but get the message "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file."

Is there another plug-in I need?

Help!

Thanks

Hi,

Yes, I confirm. Here is the good configuration (for B&W negative)

This is not the default options :

I'm using a Silverfast trial version with my new Plustek 7300 (it came bundled with a PC version so they are sending me the Leopard version by post, not available for download) and so far I am finding it better than VueScan for one very particular reason: I have VuescanPro and it has no profile for Fuji Superia either 100 or 400 and I cannot tweak manually or use other profiles to get good results. I emailed the author who, I thought, was rather unhelpful if prompt.

Silverfast on the other hand has the relevant profiles and does a very natural looking job: it's just that I have to put up with the watermark until the CD arrives!

One question: when I scan in RAW in Vuescan, it keeps the orange mask. How do I get rid of that in PS or Lightroom?

Best

Tim

I am using Vuescan on a Mac, but I do not see an option for Raw (though it does give me Tiff and Jpegs). Where can I find the raw option? Thanks in advance.

on the output tab about half way down the options list.... but it keeps the orange mask
