Pick a Card "Reader"

Still ramping up my knowledge base here’ so what’s the preferred SD card reader among the Leica dynasty?

Regards,

Some Sandisk SD cards are sold with a little USB reader-thingy on the side:

Sandisk 1GB Standard SD Memory Card ( SDSDBR-1024-A10 ) - Digital Cameras

It works well. The larger readers, like 12 in 1 or 8 in 1, all install loads of USB ports: a PITA.

Hi Daniel,

How will you use your card reader? May sound like a funny question, but if on a desktop, I prefer one with a cable for hooking up to the system unit... I have the following:

Sandisk | Extreme USB 2.0 Card Reader | SDDRX3-3IN1R | B&H Photo

Does a fine job. Keeps the reader next to my monitor for easy access. For my laptop, I prefer one that does not have a cable. Since I have a MacBook Pro, I use an express card reader:

Griffin Technology | ExpressCard/34 5:1 Card Reader | 1095-XCRDR

Finally, If you have a Windows laptop, you could use

Sandisk | MobilMate SD Plus 5-in-1 Reader | SDDR-103R | B&H

However, I have no experience with these... do not know if some are better performers as well. Doubt much variation. I would get one that is the best built.

Well, this one appears to be the coolest and most convenient option thus far, since I have a MacBook Pro. Hopefully, OS 10.5 will allow my 34-slot to work with this reader. Thanks to all who responded.

JimP, that Griffin express card 34 reader looks very cool and handy. Someone else on a previous post suggested a similar express card reader by Belkin.

I'm curious to know how far, if at all, these readers stick out from the MacBook? Would I need to remove the reader when I pack the laptop into my snug carrycase/bag?

I'm currently using a Streamline 33 in 1 USB card reader. No problems with sandisc ultra II 2gb cards. The reader was cheap, too (< $15), but want to get away from USB cords.

thanks,

rt

I have a MacbookPro, and would highly recommend the Sonnet Multimedia Reader Card. It fits flush into the slot, and the transfer rate is much higher than a standard USB connection. It also accepts many different types of cards. It's a great little device, though I don't know whether it is better than similar ones made by other companies. They also make them for Windows machines. Here's a link:

I have been using the eFilm Delkin Express card, which essentially sits in my express card slot all the time. The 2 issues I see are:1)Some SD cards are not read(my Ridata cards are not recognized?;SanDisk cards are no problem.I have not tried others yet.2) no CF card slot(too big for express card slot).Speed fine, otherwise & very handy. As I stated earlier in a thread I assumed all cards would work as they had for my USB CARD READER; & having bought this through the Apple web-site I assumed all would be fine,Oh well I'll just keep shooting.Using a MacBook Pro_17"_Leopard_2Gb cards

Thanks, people.

I stopped by the neighborhood computer box store yesterday and picked up the SanDisk Multicard ExpressCard 34 Adapter #SDAD-109A11 that was suggested earlier.

As JimP said, it fits flush into my MacBookPro slot. Simply "plug and play". So far it appears to work just fine with my Sandisk Ultra II 2gb cards. Transfer times appear faster than via my USB card reader.

Of possible interest, it specifically says that it accepts SDHC cards, too.

Sleek, nifty, and no cords! :D
