Advertisement Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Hi Daniel Ortego, Take a look here Pick a Card "Reader". I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted November 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 14, 2007 Funny but I only use Lexar cards and as for reader I have a Sandisc. Flip a coin and get one that is USB2 and handles cards above 2GB's in size.
asmith Posted November 14, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 14, 2007 I use one by hama; it's very small and light and it works. Alwyn
hdrmd Posted November 14, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 14, 2007 I use a Promaster SD/IMMC reader. It is not particularly fast, but it cheap and light, and it works. Also, the largest SD cards I can use are the 2G size, so it doesn't take that long to download anyway. DR
Dantist Posted November 14, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 14, 2007 Purchased a TRANSCEND - Multi Reader RDM2 - USB 2.0 - Silver. Quite OK until now. Bit less than two minutes to transfer 1 Gb to the computer
vanhulsenbeek Posted November 14, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 14, 2007 Still ramping up my knowledge base here’ so what’s the preferred SD card reader among the Leica dynasty?Regards, Some Sandisk SD cards are sold with a little USB reader-thingy on the side: Sandisk 1GB Standard SD Memory Card ( SDSDBR-1024-A10 ) - Digital Cameras It works well. The larger readers, like 12 in 1 or 8 in 1, all install loads of USB ports: a PITA.
JimP Posted November 14, 2007 Share #7 Posted November 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Daniel, How will you use your card reader? May sound like a funny question, but if on a desktop, I prefer one with a cable for hooking up to the system unit... I have the following: Sandisk | Extreme USB 2.0 Card Reader | SDDRX3-3IN1R | B&H Photo Does a fine job. Keeps the reader next to my monitor for easy access. For my laptop, I prefer one that does not have a cable. Since I have a MacBook Pro, I use an express card reader: Griffin Technology | ExpressCard/34 5:1 Card Reader | 1095-XCRDR Finally, If you have a Windows laptop, you could use Sandisk | MobilMate SD Plus 5-in-1 Reader | SDDR-103R | B&H However, I have no experience with these... do not know if some are better performers as well. Doubt much variation. I would get one that is the best built.
Daniel Ortego Posted November 14, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted November 14, 2007 Hi Daniel,How will you use your card reader? May sound like a funny question, but if on a desktop, I prefer one with a cable for hooking up to the system unit... For my laptop, I prefer one that does not have a cable. Since I have a MacBook Pro, I use an express card reader: Griffin Technology | ExpressCard/34 5:1 Card Reader | 1095-XCRDR Well, this one appears to be the coolest and most convenient option thus far, since I have a MacBook Pro. Hopefully, OS 10.5 will allow my 34-slot to work with this reader. Thanks to all who responded. Regards,
JimP Posted November 14, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 14, 2007 Since you live in Yuma, I believe Best Buy sells the SanDisk version of this. May be faster for you to pick up. SanDisk - ExpressCard Adapter for Select Media Cards - SDAD-109-A11 Check their web site. In the listing they give you the option to check if in stock at your local store. rtphotos Posted November 14, 2007 Share #10 Posted November 14, 2007 JimP, that Griffin express card 34 reader looks very cool and handy. Someone else on a previous post suggested a similar express card reader by Belkin. I'm curious to know how far, if at all, these readers stick out from the MacBook? Would I need to remove the reader when I pack the laptop into my snug carrycase/bag? I'm currently using a Streamline 33 in 1 USB card reader. No problems with sandisc ultra II 2gb cards. The reader was cheap, too (< $15), but want to get away from USB cords. thanks, rt
JimP Posted November 14, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 14, 2007 Hello RT, I have the SanDisk. Is flush with the opening when inserted, so I do not think you will have to remove it. Also, works fine with Leopard. Jim
Tony C. Posted November 14, 2007 Share #12 Posted November 14, 2007 I have a MacbookPro, and would highly recommend the Sonnet Multimedia Reader Card. It fits flush into the slot, and the transfer rate is much higher than a standard USB connection. It also accepts many different types of cards. It's a great little device, though I don't know whether it is better than similar ones made by other companies. They also make them for Windows machines. johnwolf Posted November 14, 2007 Share #13 Posted November 14, 2007 I use a SanDisk 4-in-1, but I wouldn't recommend it. SD cards often don't seat properly and make contact, so I frequently must remove and reinsert. John
orjanf Posted November 14, 2007 Share #14 Posted November 14, 2007 Re the Sonnet - does it work OK with 4G SD cards? (One of my card readers ignores 4G cards it if more than 2G written )
fjmcsu Posted November 15, 2007 Share #15 Posted November 15, 2007 I have been using the eFilm Delkin Express card, which essentially sits in my express card slot all the time. The 2 issues I see are:1)Some SD cards are not read(my Ridata cards are not recognized?;SanDisk cards are no problem.I have not tried others yet.2) no CF card slot(too big for express card slot).Speed fine, otherwise & very handy. As I stated earlier in a thread I assumed all cards would work as they had for my USB CARD READER; & having bought this through the Apple web-site I assumed all would be fine,Oh well I'll just keep shooting.Using a MacBook Pro_17"_Leopard_2Gb cards

rtphotos Posted November 18, 2007 Share #17 Posted November 18, 2007 Thanks, people. I stopped by the neighborhood computer box store yesterday and picked up the SanDisk Multicard ExpressCard 34 Adapter #SDAD-109A11 that was suggested earlier. As JimP said, it fits flush into my MacBookPro slot. Simply "plug and play". So far it appears to work just fine with my Sandisk Ultra II 2gb cards. Transfer times appear faster than via my USB card reader. Of possible interest, it specifically says that it accepts SDHC cards, too. Sleek, nifty, and no cords! rt (still using tiger)
LichMD Posted November 18, 2007 Share #18 Posted November 18, 2007 I have the Griffin 5 in 1 Expresscard reader in my MBP, sits flush in the laptop. Works like a charm.
Daniel Ortego Posted November 19, 2007 Author Share #19 Posted November 19, 2007 Ok, I ended up purchasing the SanDisk Multi Card and like' others have mentioned, it's pretty slick. I'm using it now as I update from 1.108. Regards,
bradreiman Posted November 19, 2007 Share #20 Posted November 19, 2007 i use no reader. the sandisk ultra II 2 gig card that folds in half to become it's own reader has been my card of choice since i got the m8. i have four now. one of them crapped out after the last firmware update but i didn't lose any images or anything. they are cheap and durable .....b
