I use this little thing from Squarehood - bought two for my X100V as I’d heard the “horror” stories of them coming loose and falling off. I swear it has improved my photography ten fold and looks so much better than those Leica beer bottle caps 🤪.

In all seriousness, I had it lying around so I thought why not.

Also considering the squarehood mini, how do you like it compared to 10-12 mm options? Would love to see more pics of your camera!

Go for it. I originally purchased it - well two actually - for another camera, along with one of their squarehoods. It only sits about 3mm above the shutter release and fits nicely under the pad of my index finger. I do recommend using a tiny drop of a light thread lock on the threads. Neither of them have budged.

I've never tried the larger soft shutter releases so can’t compare the two.

I can't quite believe I am joining in here.  But, it's Saturday with little to do but watch it rain!  Ha!.

I might suggest you check out the "soft releases" (why are they "soft"?) at https://lolumina.com.  I added one of their small ones to both my Q3 43 and my Q2M.  They are SO small they are not at all noticeable if that matters.  And, the rest so close to the camera shutter that it's hardly noticeable there.  What they do is provide a a wider and more comfortable platform for the finger which I find a tactile pleasure to use.  They just work!

On some old, particular camera designs (a few illustrated above), knobs, dials, and buttons actually interfered with one’s ability to find and press the shutter release. For those cameras, added release buttons fulfilled a function, a purpose.

But to me, IMHO, their widespread adoption now appears to be driven less by functionality and more by social media, fashion, and the desire for personalization. Some see them online and think they need one. Some like to add a bit of colour or “bling.” Some find it gives a rare chance to make the camera “mine,” different from everyone else’s. Companies see it as something they can make cheaply and easily and flog online for 10x the cost.

Because the price usually is fairly low, everyone is happy . . . no harm, no foul.

And the “soft” release button spreads . . . .

I have this fingerprint sensor release button who locks /disable the cam via bluetooth if the button registered an unknown finger or if the button is away from the cam for more than five feet. I can configure different camera settings to each finger, so my pinkie finger is for the landscape settings.

Greetings, Reynolds Young,

I , too have a Q3 43 and am very happy with the soft release button I was able to easily screw into the existing shutter.    Like you , I also have a Q2 M.  Would you please explain how to "install" a soft shutter release button on this camera.

Thank you,

Wilkes

Just got my Q3 earlier this week from LC Manchester. Great people to deal with and I'm looking forward to my free hour with one of their experts to sort out any queries in due course.

Just wondering what are the real benefits of the soft shutter release and do i need to alter the way i press it

Leica makes the best cameras for about a century. If there was any benefit from a soft shutter release knob, all Leicas would have them.

I have red €7,- button on my €7000,- Q3….. For me it shortens the button travel a bit, and I like the way it looks.

40 (50?) years ago, Nikon made one for the F2 (called the AR-1, if I remember correctly…) seemingly now selling at £65 on eBay.

Leica did as well. OZTNO. €200,-

Got rid of them yesterday, except for the one on my X-E1.

The Leicas have a very functional ridge that lets you feel button travel.
