The whole point of Q series is to get you into  the Leica world and then buy the M.

I disagree. I sold my Q2 to buy an M11 and quickly resold it to buy another Q2. I now have a Q3

They are very different cameras with different features and a different user experience.

I also disagree.  The majority of users we sell Q series cameras to have a completely different set of requirements than those who buy M.

No interest in an M.  Please don't take away my Leica card.  I absolutely adore the Q2.  :)

The glass of course is amazing but no interest in rangefinder shooting.  For my manual focus fix and lenses with character vs. extreme perfection I have some nice Voigtlander lenses for my Sonys and Fujis with excellent EVFs.

Count me in the club of not wanting to shoot a rangefinder. The Q3 is unique in what it does and can do as a tool. If It weren’t for a bunch of Canon EF and RF lenses I’d be looking at the SL system. But as fine as those M cameras are… Rangefinder, no thanks.

I bought an M11 after buying a Q2 so it worked on me. Different use cases but complimentary

False logic: people have been considering buying M cameras long before the Q line was even a twinkle in the eye of Leica’s product planners. The M line sells well enough not to need support from other models.

For now. A brand has to regularly renew its' customer base, otherwise it will die with them (respectively us).

Exactly. Leica knows that the range-finder market is diminishing. The technology is old and the user base aging. Leica are creating new markets with the SL and Q cameras to make up for the shortfall.

Don't shoot the messenger. I love the idea of the M series but as time goes on it will become more niche and less profitable. The problem for Leica is how to provide an M series form factor with autofocus and interchangeable lenses. The Q is part way, but how do Leica engineer compact autofocus lenses that could provide an interchangeable solution that new and younger photographers will want and will drive more revenue.

Hate to say it but I think you are correct.

Most of my customers who purchase M digital are older, and previous M film users.

The younger (I can say that…I’m in my 60’s 😂) buyers want mirrorless…either the SL or Q series.

And yes…we have 20 year olds who buy the Sofort!

It's a bit like Porsche's 911 challenge. If you protect it too much, you inhibit the potential growth of other models like the Boxster and Cayman which can handle just as much power as the 911, if not even better with a mid-engine balance.

It feels from observation that the M is similar for Leica. People accept it's a legend, but don't necessarily want a camera that works like a legend, just the outstanding results you can get from an M and M lenses. At what point does Leica rip off the bandaid and design a new camera that has the form factor of an M but has a built in EVF? Lenses are another challenge as the L-mount FF lenses feel like Sumo wrestlers to handle, despite outstanding results.

This is one of those topics that has covered many pages on this forum already and I'n sure will cover many more as time moves forward.

The Cadillac and Lincoln in USA and in the UK, the Jaguar problem. If you hang on to older customers, you eventually go to a dwindling number of funerals and not many marriages or christenings.  It's why the loss of the APSC cameras still feels hugely significant. You remove a camera priced around $2,000 as your "entry point" and now have to step up to the Q3 at three times that amount. That's a tough stretch for buyers and dealers.
