On the SL2-S image thread, there is currently a side discussion on the surprizing amenability of the camera's files to monochrome conversion, please see here and here.  I wonder if other SL2-S users have a similar experience and whether their output would be comparable to other monochrome models like Q2M and M10M.  I look forward to your comments.   Regards.

  • ibramr changed the title to SL2-S Files and Monochrome Conversion

As @frame-it said, we are talking about two complete sensor technologies. With the SL, the sensor is equipped with the RGB filter. I like BW photography very much because for me it is not a loss of color but a gain of detail and expression in the subject.
A later conversion of color RAW results using high quality RAW processing with a pro tool into a digital black and white photo comes close (room for much discussion and emotion here!) to a BW image (I use CaptureOne). But the subtle (gray) differences of a B&W sensor are simply in a class of their own without the RGB filter on the monochrome. If I were to touch on the subject of dynamic range and ISO, it would go even further.

I once had the M10 mono on loan and was blown away: the results were noise-free, fine-grained detail that was simply stunning.
The use of B&W filters is another issue to keep a distance from the color sensors.
However, the price of the Q./M.Mono prevents me from purchasing it for that "small but subtle difference" of native BW versus converted BW image. I would like an SL.Monochrom, but purely in terms of price as an add-on body, I'm signing off as a serious interested party.

M11M 50m APO

Cropped:

you can see you can use both for B&W

the difference comes in high ISO, the M11M is much cleaner.
