The SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen was not a welcome addition to a low horizontal skyline punctuated only by a profusion of tall church spires. When completed in 1961, at 230 feet, it was the first tall building in the city but has been surpassed many times since.

The building's parti was inspired by SOM's landmark Lever House in New York City where a tower is placed on top of a low auxiliary building that fills the site and provides a open plaza on its roof surface for the tower. It was a creative solution to the NY zoning restrictions that would have otherwise required set-backs.

Arne Jacobsen also known for several classic furniture designs designed every single element of the building including every item of furniture and interior furnishings and finishes. Few architects, like FLW, are ever given this freedom.  But alas, most of the interior furnishings and colors have since been replaced with subsequent changes in management.
