I agree that a 28 mm lens can be used as a portrait lens, from relatively close up (no need to "keep the distance" and use for "environmental portraits"). The shorter focal length makes the viewer more connected with the image, provides greater feeling of intimacy. The trick is to use the perspective distortion to your advantage, e.g. to point the lens down a bit (or ask the sitter to adjust their pose), to make the forehead slightly wider and the chin narrower. The image below was shot with the Apo Summicron SL on SL2. Of course, the hand is a bit bigger than what it should be (and I sometimes use liquify and other PS trickery to correct this) but the image works for me as is. There will be people who say that I should have shot it with an 85mm lens but so what, they can shoot like that themselves.

That's about a 50% crop with the 28 cron. I have to look very hard for distortion.
