A recently purchased and in mint condition ( it even had that new smell)-yesterday I took a few shots without film loaded and this object

jammed the shutter - removed it and it worked again but can anyone tell me what it is and where it came from?

Hard to tell how big it is, but looks small.  Looks like some sort of padding / sound reduction.  Slots, no screws.

If the camera continues to work, you can consider keeping it, or talk with the seller.  Not mint condition if something jams the shutter….

???

David.

Looks to me like a hot shoe cover and is roughly the right size.  Perhaps someone (unwisely) popped it into chamber so it wouldn't get lost?  Although you'd think that on the hot shoe would be a better place.

Pete.

It fell off the underside of your mirror.  To see where it goes, take your lens off and fire the camera on B, keeping it open.

Here is what it looks like on my R9 - which is similar. I would return this camera.
