fielden Posted November 12, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I have had my M8 for one week now and must say that I absolutely love it and at this stage think it was worth every penny. This was also my first RF camera and this has led to one issue - no, not forgetting to remove the lens cap - but I keep forgetting to focus. doh! I am blown away by the quality of the images, the sharpness, bokeh and colours are amazing. Before making the purchase I had considered upgrading my 20d to a 5d with some 'L' Glass but somehow it didn't seem like value for money - is that weird. But my reason to go with M8 was to get the best image quality I could afford, but also I really bought into the Leica way - total manual control over the image and I have already seen the benefits. I also really like using prime lenses. I wondered if I would miss the zoom, but I really don't at all. I think, having played around a bit I would like a true 28mm lens as whilst the 28 elmarit is fine for my general stuff, I would like something a little wider, I need to look at the CV15... So far so good. No serious problems witnessed apart from the AWB which I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I can correct it easily in lightroom or set it manually in camera. But I really, really love it and can tell already that it is going to bring me years of enjoyment and my photography education is going to increase for more than if I had continued down the canon 5d DSLR route. So onwards and upwards!
Advertisement Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Hi fielden, Take a look here 1st impressions after one week.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted November 12, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 12, 2007 Graeme, I'm not surprised that your reaction has been so positive. A bit brave perhaps to spend so much on your first rangefinder camera, but since everything has worked out so well, nothing to worry about. I felt the same as you after my first week of M8 ownership. Some 10 months later my opinion hasn't changed.
Shootist Posted November 12, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 12, 2007 Take a look at the CV 21mm f/4 M-Mount lens. It is rangefinder coupled and one fine lens for the money, or even more money then they are charging.
stunsworth Posted November 12, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 12, 2007 Graeme, if you are interested in the Voigtlander 21mm, and are coming to the Manchester pre-Christmas get together, let me know and I'll bring mine along for you to have a play with. I have the earlier screw mount version. It's rangefinder coupled, and I believe the same optical design as the more recent M bayonet fitting version. Of course this all assumes you can wait until then <grin>

carstenw Posted November 12, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 12, 2007 Famous last words indeed! If I got a dollar every time I said that in the last year, I'd have accrued enough for a couple of lens hoods Not Leica lens hoods!

Daniel Ortego Posted November 13, 2007 Share #18 Posted November 13, 2007 Well, I’m with ya brother since I also just purchased the M8 as my first rangefinder camera. Likewise, I purchased the 28-cron’ as my first piece of L-glass. Moreover, I plan on going wider as well. Although in my case I will likely opt for the 21-Elmarit. In the interim, I have been reading and registering for any local photography course I can find. And yes, it did require the biggest’ of balls to jump in with an initial outlay of 8500-bucks as a non-pro hobbyist’. Oh well, I figure I have about another 15-years before old age keeps' me from focusing or holding a proper stance. Regards,
Shootist Posted November 13, 2007 Share #19 Posted November 13, 2007 Daniel what do you call old age? I'm 56 and can't hold the camera as steady as I use to, I also can hit a golf ball as far as I use to. Getting old/er sucks.
