c6gowin Posted November 12, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I received a production model 75mm Summarit for evaluation and want to share my initial impressions. I thought it would be good to get some sample photos and handling impressions out as soon as possible and follow-up with a more detailed evaluation in the next few days. My first thoughts upon opening the box and handling the lens were: * Feels like a Leica lens - excellent build quality and great looks * Size. weight, and handling of the 75mm Summarit is very similar to the 50mm Summilux The Summarit uses a different font (classic) for the lettering, the red dot (index mark) is a deeper red color, the lens cap is a push-on metal, it comes with a lens pouch, no hood, and 2 year warranty (materials/workmanship). The following photo shows the 75mm Summarit and what comes in the box. The next series of photos show the 75mm Summarit next to the 50mm Summilux. Welcome, dear visitor! c6gowin Posted November 12, 2007 Author Share #2 Posted November 12, 2007 Sample photos will have to wait until tomorrow. The web conversions didn't look right on the preview and I need to redo. Sorry.
TEBnewyork Posted November 12, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 12, 2007 I don't know much (ok anything) about lens design but pretty shocking that the summarit is bigger than the 75 'lux.
etrigan63 Posted November 12, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 12, 2007 Could you post a picture of the 6-bit code please? Not surprising at all Terry. The Summarit was designed to provide a Leica level of lens performance using no exotic glass or aspherical components. It was designed to be mass-produced. The Summilux and all lenses prior to the Summarit line were all hand fitted, each lens being assembled with a level of care usually afforded to Formula One race cars, hence the price. Before Summarit, all Leica lenses were unique individual pieces.
blakley Posted November 12, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 12, 2007 I don't know much (ok anything) about lens design but pretty shocking that the summarit is bigger than the 75 'lux. The comparison is with the 50 Lux ASPH, not with the 75 Lux. The 75 Summarit is much smaller than the 75 Lux.

luigi bertolotti Posted November 12, 2007 Share #8 Posted November 12, 2007 I shall appreciate a lot first impressions and, above all, example pics and tests on focusing... of the new line, the 75 is the lens I really think of (I haven't 75 at all, and 90 is a sort of "real tele" on M8...). From the pics above my cold impressions are : - Nice sizing : just a bit longer than a 50 - Nice lettering... for what it worths... - The pouch, not susrprisingly, seems crude in comparision with the classic leather / zip model : but anyway is provided in the package... - No hood provided !!! and this is annoying, even for I fear that, being they surely outsourced somewhere, they'll follow a logistic of their own, modern-style, and can happen you get the lens and wait 3 months for the accessory hood.... - They have put no much attention to provide a decently wide range of diaphragm settings... my old Hektor 7,3 cm goes from f1,9 to f25...I'd wait f32 from a f2,5... marknorton Posted November 12, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 12, 2007 I think the pouch makes perfect sense and contributes to the lower cost. I have a box of the leather cases and only ever use them to send the lenses back to Leica. The Noctilux one will wear out soon... Like the metal lens cap and the appearance of the lens is fine. What does that little card with the red cord say? It would be good to see the 6 bit code so that Carsten can update his list...

TEBnewyork Posted November 12, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 12, 2007 I actually wish I had the Summarit type lens cap for my 50 'cron. With the filter attached the lens cap with the clips is not stable and is way too easy to pop off.
bradreiman Posted November 12, 2007 Share #12 Posted November 12, 2007 i for one am excited about these lenses. 2.5 is pretty fast and with digital I think it will suffice ( i have a nocti and a cv 351.2 for fast). I also predict other people will feel the same way and these lenses are going to be extremely popular. not that it matters but i like the deeper red plastic "dot" on the lens, i always wondered why only "black-paint" lenses had these true red "dots"-they look better.....b
stephengilbert Posted November 12, 2007 Share #13 Posted November 12, 2007 Is it just a matter of time 'til people start wondering how to install dark red dots on their lenses?

For the new M shooter, film or digital, they will be popular, that is if you can get them.

c6gowin Posted November 12, 2007 Author Share #16 Posted November 12, 2007 I apologize for the delay in getting sample photos up. I have been traveling this morning and just now got to a computer. First I want add my thoughts on some of the commenst so far: Lens Pouch - I love it. I believe it is more useable than the very nice leather cases provided with the other lenses because it is much more compact while still providing some protection. I would like to have some in various lengths. Lens Cap - I think I prefer the pinch-on style better. Terry is correct that the pinch-on style is more vulnerable to getting lost. However, I usually put the lens cap in my pocket when shooting and the push-on type (Summarit) is considerably thicker/bulkier. Lens Hood - it would have been nice to have one included. Personally, I would rather pay an extra $30 - $50 and get the lens hood included in the package rather than having to try to locate one to purchase separately. I normally always shoot with a lens hood and I found it kinda liberating using the 75mm Summarit without one due to the small form factor. It would have been great if the lens had a built-in hood like the 50mm Summilux and 75 / 90 Summicrons. I haven't yet tested the flare resistance of the Summarit so I just don't know how important the lens hood will be. So far it hasn't been an issue. Availability - I was told the Summarits should be available "around Thanksgiving". Now for some photos and crops. All photos were taken with an M8 (latest firmware) and processed in Lightroom with ONLY white balance and exposure corrections. All other settings were at my default configuration. Recovery, fill light, brightness, contrast, clarity, vibrance, and saturation are set to 0, blacks set to 5, curves 0, noise suppression - 0, 25, and sharpening 25, 1.0, 25, 0 The first photo shows the 6-bit code as requested. Sorry it is not the sharpest photo. I can re-shoot it if someone really needs a sharper version. The second photo and crop were shot at iso 320, 1/500 sec, f2.5 and a distance of about 20-25 meters. c6gowin Posted November 12, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted November 12, 2007 Here are some more 75 Summarit samples and crops. All shots taken at or near the minimum focus distance. My purpose for these photos was to see the out of focus rendering of the lens. You can see that I missed the focus slightly on the dogwood leaf, but it was moving in the wind and I was hand holding (swaying some). Dogwood Leaf: iso 160, 1/750 sec, f 2.5, distance about 0.7 meters Yellow Maple Leaf: iso 160, 1/1500 sec, f 2.5, distance about 0.7 meters Welcome, dear visitor! Shootist Posted November 12, 2007 Share #18 Posted November 12, 2007 Shots look good. Lens Pouch: Yes I might use them if they were cloth. The leather ones are to big to carry in a bag. That is dependiing on the size of your bag. Mine is small and I fit 6 lenses in it not including the one on the camera. Also getting the lens out and back in is a pain. I save the leather pouch for that day I may sell a lens. Lens cap: Have used both types and with the IR filters on the lens the clip on one are better suited. Push on ones may not work, or be to loose, and fall off easier. No comment on the hood.

rosuna Posted November 12, 2007 Share #20 Posted November 12, 2007 At close distances the performance of all lenses drop. The new Summarits haven't floating lenses. In any case, the performance of the new lenses, and the 75mm in particular, seems impressive.
