Shepherdphotographer Posted June 19, 2023 Share #1  Posted June 19, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, I was looking for a VII series UV filter for an Elmarit-R 90/2.8 first version and I found one like new at a very affordable price, but on the frame there was the writing: "Leica VII UV/IR series" : Would I get differences in performance compared to a normal UV filter, or are they the same thing? Thanks in advance everyone! Is it a UV filter specially designed for infrared sensors? Edited June 19, 2023 by Shepherdphotographer

bherman01545 Posted June 19, 2023 Share #2 Â Posted June 19, 2023 I believe that UV/IR is an infrared filter and is not the same thing. Also, the series 7 has a standard screw-in equivalent, which might be 43mm
Shepherdphotographer Posted June 19, 2023 Author Share #3 Â Posted June 19, 2023 (edited) Thanks, bherman01545. No, it isn't a 43mm, it is a serie VII, very similar to 55mm and it is can mounted only by a ring adapter filter. I have got many serie vii filters ...... Shepherdphotographer Posted June 19, 2023 Author Share #4 Â Posted June 19, 2023 It seems to be a neutral filter.......
Shepherdphotographer Posted June 19, 2023 Author Share #5 Â Posted June 19, 2023 I've found the answer in another thread in this forum, thanks!
Shepherdphotographer Posted June 20, 2023 Author Share #6  Posted June 20, 2023 (edited) I've found several old threads in this forum, and after reading them all almost entirely, I seem to understand that modern digital cameras are supposed to have a very effective IR filter over the sensor, better than previous digital cameras and modern lenses block most UV light. So you really don't need a UV/IR filter. Any filter will degrade image quality, with decreased resolution and more surfaces for flare, so unless you're using a filter for a specific purpose, or to protect the front element in harsh environments, it's probably best to avoid using them.  I already knew this, however I have always mounted a UV filter, at least, on all my lenses, for protection from dust and scratches. It's also true that my Elmarit-R 90/2.8, like all my other (many) R lenses, are old lenses, so they don't have a protective layer that blocks IR like modern lenses. I could not understand, however, if there are any differences compared to the normal UV filter ....... I've read, always on other threads here on the forum, that an IR/UV filter has the consequence of a color shift of the images, towards purple/red, but I'm not sure I understood correctly and how strong this effect is. Unfortunately the VII series filters are starting to be difficult to find, especially in excellent condition.......
