This is absolutely Leica's MO...release a cosmetically different version or special edition at the end of life of a given camera. It kind of sucks, as it would have been nice to have the option over the last four years, but they are not in it for us, they are in it for them. The best news about this from my front is that it is a clear sign that the SL3 is likely at most a year away. That said, I agree with pgh, it is going to have to be a lot better (not just in specs, but actual image character, color etc), otherwise I will be sticking with the SL2 for a while. Of all the Leica cameras I have had, the SL2 has treated me the best (meaning superb results and 0 failures in any way to the camera or any of the lenses throughout the entire time I have had the camera (since 2019 or so). No other Leica has done that for me...

Mind if I cut and paste some of your comments here and I use it in my own forum comments 😎

Admittedly, I am itching to try my few Leica SL APO primes on the M11 sensor at some point (e.g. SL3). These APOs deserve as much resolution as the industry can throw at 'em! But I am in no hurry to replace my SL2.

I can never understand why companies make a big thing about the colour of a camera. The colour of a camera will not improve the taken image. Nobody has ever looked at a photograph and said "That would have been a much better image if it had been taken with a blue/black/white... camera".

As for Leica:

Build quality - Nailed it

Images quality - Nailed it

Customer service - Nailed it

Price - Err, not so much. To miss-quote somebody else, it is reassuringly expensive .

Because it's Gorgeous. Leica knows it, I know it, and you probably know it too 😉. As the song goes.."she's so fine there's no telling where the money went"

Lol. Road & Track did a story on the new Porsche 911S back in early 1970’s. The headline has been with me ever since.

“Muscle car performance, without the stigma of low cost.”

I don't entirely agree. Obviously, it's shrewd cynical marketing by Leica. But that aside, taking pictures is not simply a mechanical matter. It's very much an emotional undertaking too. So it makes sense that you want your tools to be part of that emotional experience. Anybody who thinks that an Aston Martin DB5 is just a box with wheels to get you from A to B is either a Spock-like being or not being entirely straight with you. BTW, I won't be getting a silver SL2 cool though it is. :)

I know what you are saying but in F1 or NASCAR does the best looking car always win? For me I don't care how a camera looks as long as I can depend on it to deliver the results every time. I will say that the SL2 is a stunning camera. No need to gild the lily.

It's not about "winning". This is a work of art in silver, and I'm not sure it would look that great in black, pink, or purple :)

We are all visual artists. Many of us care about the look of our tools.

Oh yes, that is a work of art. We can certainly agree on that.

Coming with special editions is a sign that sth new is coming. I hope it will be soon, as I am doubting how too proceed with the sl. I don’t care about editions, functionality is key, especially with a sl.

Just saw the silver SL2 at Leica Store. It's a very sexy-looking camera! :)

Thanks for the report Sohail. I'm in the States and I've had my silver SL2 pre-ordered since early on the first day available (June 15th) at B&H. Since B&H has the lower tiered status of just an "authorized dealer" I'm prepared to wait while the Leica Boutiques and Stores get their preferred allotment of the 1000 units first. There's a silver SL2 for sale right now on the Fred Miranda Buy & Sell for a few hundred $ over list price but I resisted 😉

I tend not to buy from extended stores or non Leica Sales because here in Australia these stores order through Leica Wholesale. Leica Wholesale invariably do not have the same level of stock as Leica Stores proper. It was quite frustrating when I ordered an SL2 Kit last April from my preferred Camera shop in my city. I was going to wait months, I had already with 4 weeks and nothing, while Leica Sydney and Melbourne were showing that they had stock available. So the two entities Leica Wholesale are different and it would seem that Leica prefer that you buy from their stores directly or have considerable waiting periods. It was my preference to buy from my City store because invariable they could offer a free battery of discount as a long time customer as well as direct assistance if the warranty requires actioning. I am afraid that special kind of loyalty and local relationship with vendors is not possible now because it's easy for me to purchase online and the lens or camera is at my door two days after payment. I hope it is different with the Silver Leica and B&H come through.

Well we will see on the wait Ken. I've been a B&H customer for decades and they've always treated me right. Also, B&H having a 30 day return policy and paying my local 9.5% sales tax through their PayBoo credit card is a consideration for me.

I like it, it gives off Leicaflex / R vibes.  But tough sell when we expect an SL3 in the short to medium term.  Also feels a bit odd pairing with a Noctilux bundle.

I think they're just trying to get rid of those Nocti 1.2 lenses because they are as niche as niche gets and they've probably got a bunch lying around

Some find black and purple quite appealing…

That's a bit harsh, Leica isn't forcing anyone to buy their cameras.

Run-out special editions have advantages for Leica and for customers. For Leica they keep sales prices up near the end of the product's lifecycle. Most brands discount heavily to get rid of the last few units. For customers they provide a well--proven and yet unique camera that is likely to have higher resale value down the line. It's really a win-win.

This, exactly.

I bought the M10R BP after I could have bought the M11. Compare the used prices. Not sure if it has or will hold as well with the SL system, but it is interesting, I agree, that these editions are usually a win-win.
