soundfanz Posted June 14, 2023 Share #1  Posted June 14, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I just read my profile, and see that I have all of 1 post to my name after joining in July 2010. 😃 Back then I was awaiting a Digilux 2 which was coming from overseas. From memory I did enjoy that Camera, but ended up selling it. I primarily use Olympus MFT at the moment, but do own an excellent little Fuji X-T1 and a couple of primes that I use for street photography. Have also owned the original Fuji X100 in the past. The reason I am back here is because I have decided to find a used Q version one at a decent price, and buy it.. I was also looking at the latest V version of the Fuji X100, but made a decision that my next fixed lens camera would be the Leica Q. I do think I prefer the 28-ish mm focal length that the Q provides... and look forward to contributing here in the future. dpitt Posted June 15, 2023 Share #2  Posted June 15, 2023 Welcome back! My first Leica was a Digilux2 too. I have had great fun with it and still do occasionally. But unfortunately it came with a bug 🤔 This bug kind of spoiled me for other brands. I am now addicted to the Leica look. I tried to cure it a few times by using Olympus and Fuji, and still have a Lumix MFT body. But I keep coming back to Leica solutions (old and new) for anything that has to do with real photography. It is a good time to buy a Q, with the introduction of the Q3. Take your time and pick a winner to stay with you for years...

If you’re buying used and not bothered between aps or full frame you could save some money by putting a wide angle converter on a Fujifilm X100v which will give a similar aov to 28mm. Come back in 2036 and tell us how you got on with with a used Q!

Come back in 2036 and tell us how you got on with with a used Q!  I considered the x100v with converter, used the original x100 with the converter. But won't be paying the inflated prices the V is fetching now. And I'll be back well before '36, sarcasm noted. 😉

It's vastly overrated, it has an enormous amount of quirks that annoyed me to death, unnoticed by incapable reviewers - The biggest drawback for a fixed lens camera, the lens! It's kind of "sharpness all over the frame wide open is the way we're going to trick people that this is a good lens". Very dull and flat, bad color separation, bad focus transition. When I tested side by side the X100V and my M240 paired with a humble 35mm Voigtlander Nokton 1.4 II SC, the Leica destroyed the Fuji by far, and on everything: color separation, 3D pop, sharpness, and anything you can think of, yes even at apertures like f4 where I expected at least a draw between the two. - Underperforming leaf shutter. When used above 1/500 wide open, it "cuts" the bokeh making it ugly, turning it useless (unless you don't care its ugliness) for high speed syncro flash needs. I ended up using electronic shutter all the time "enjoying" its jello effect and the banding in artificial light. - Embarrassing nd filter. The loss of contrast (unrecoverable in post) is palpable in any light condition, the loss of contrast and shadow detail it's massive when you have a lot of sun, which is when an integrated ND filter is usually needed on such cameras. Never seen in my whole life such a low quality ND filter. - Its menu is a psyc0p4th bureocrat dream. Overly complicated, partially illogical. It takes weeks to learn and just a few days to forget. So you have to learn all over again. Especially to activate and deactivate integrated flash -which takes a different route to activate an external flash...-. - Average build quality. I don't know what people think when they praise its build quality. Feels flimsy, and the dials are much stiffer in winter. The EV dial got stuck for no reason, I had to spray it with lubricant and it -kind of- worked again. - Autofocus fails when it matters. It's not bad, but I expected more from it, it's enough to have a frantic kid around to see it consistently fail. So you'd think "let's switch to manual focus!", well, too bad: it's horribly implemented. Rarely, but still, sometimes it fails also in good light. - Fujifilm RAW format. Unless you're an avid Capture One user, you're going to have harsh, bad looking raws when using Lightroom, and there's no way to make them look as good as they come out of Capture One. That said, to be a 26 megapixel raw, it's massive. - Ergonomics. It's light but at the same time feels like it's not "grippy", the shutter button and the dials click and move accidentally, pretty often.  I was looking for an improvement over my Panasonic GX1 + the 20mm 1.7, but beside the fast processor, iso, and (marginally) AF, everything it's been worse. But hey tiktok told you now it's worth 1800 euro used so let's go buy it. Thankfully I payed 880 euro new for it (I won a lucky auction on ebay) and I made over 700 on top of it. On a good side, the optical viewfinder is really fun to use and very nicely implemented in the workflow. I'd just get a Q if you want a 28mm, forget converting an X100V, that 35mm eq it's mediocre alone and the camera is vastly overpriced. As it happens I ended up buying a Q, and loved it for the short time I had it. I then came across a near new CL with 2 TL lenses for sale here in Australia at an excellent price ( Leica TL 18mm + Leica TL 18-56), so sold the Q and purchased the CL and lenses. Love the simplicity, the wheel layout, and IQ. I also just purchased a Minolta M Rokkor 40mm f2 lens, and have a Voigtlander Ultron 28mm F2 version 2 on way to me for manual purposes.
