So I just realized that on my Q3. The threaded shutter release button is only to add the soft shutter buttons.

It does not work with a cable release as there is no through hole at the bottom of the button.

First time encountering this. Do other cameras have a threaded shutter button that is only for adding buttons as well?

I guess we’re expected to use the FOTOS app for astrophotography shutter release.

Using the app should be fine for Astro work. But might cause an issue when doing more time critical photos like fireworks.

Will try out the responsiveness of the app and update.

You have uncovered a new third party product opportunity - a thread adapter for shutter button to cable release. Patent it soon, before Thorsten gets there first.

Interesting idea. But I don’t think it would work as there would still not be a way to depress the shutter button.

Update on using the Fotos app for more fast paced T mode control.

It’s bad, unreliable and laggy. Start and stop have minimum intervals and sometimes auto actuates. For exposures more than 10 seconds might be fine. Anything less, physical would be the only way.

What the ......!!  I assumed that because the Q3 had the threaded shutter release button that it would be able to use a cable release to activate the shutter. So... I ordered. a new cable release as my existing one was kinked and not smooth to depress. I'd already added a soft release button on my Q3, and the new cable release arrived today. Very nice new cable release, that I'll now only be able to use on my Fuji X100v and not the new Q3.  What a bummer!

Did you try if it works? I was wondering if they made a mistake on my particular units shutter button...

Well, at least you have a very nice new cable release for your x100v. I have no alternative uses for mine.

Hello Bryan,

Yes, I did try it. It screws in to the threaded shutter release button, but pushing the cable release does not activate the Q3’s shutter. And my new release cable even had a “Leica Red” finger grip!

Thanks for the confirmation Paul. Better not try pushing it too hard and risk stripping the threads on the shutter button! I see a lot of reviewers on YouTube saying how the Q3 now can be used with a cable release. Many people are going to be very upset.

What??  YouTube reviewers putting out misinformation??  Tell me it isn't so.   Just confirms what I've always said,  there are two types of people in this world and it's best to never listen to either one.🫣

What about the USB connection?  There are a number of remote release controllers out there with a USB connection.  I'm wondering if Leica will support one of these?  If not maybe it could be added?

That's quite stupid. Perhaps there is a special Leica cable release that will work?

I thought I saw an image in the manual of a cable connected to the camera, but I just checked and can't find it.

So, now we have a fake cable release socket.

We've already had a fake wind on lever (M10-d)

We've had fake brassing (Lenny Kravis rubbish)

Presumably next we'll have a fake Leica camera so the Hipsters can sit there drinking their Latte's while showing off their good taste in cameras without the stress of actually having to take a photograph...

To think I'm old enough to remember photojournalists actually using Leicas, and was one myself. Rather sad.

I, for one, appreciate the threaded shutter release. No, I didn’t buy a soft-release from Leica, but I do have one on my Q3 and it makes the camera more useable especially with gloves. I also have a soft-release for my M bodies but never have I felt the need for a cable release on any of my cameras.

So if having a threaded shutter button without cable release support means allowing me to add a soft-release while ensuring good weather proofing (due to exclusion of cable release support), I’m all for it. There’s nothing fake about having a better user experience with gloves in cold weather.

Also, between having the FOTOs app to remotely trigger the shutter and also preview exposure, having built-in intervalometer capability on the camera, and having a range of 10m between the camera and your phone without having to deal with wires, I can’t find any use for a threaded cable release for myself.

Does anyone know if the Q2 will allow a cable release to be used? This is a TERRIBLE idea on LEICA'S part, i for one love Long night exposures and love using an actual cable release. As bad as i would love a Q3 i would either get an M11 or a Q2, Leica definitely went SEMI PRO cam by CHANGING this little but very IMPORTANT part of such an amazing camera, I mean they could have easily OMITTED the damn VIDEO OPTION and left this cable release usage as usual, if i want to do a video i will use my IPHONE.  Very DISAPPOINTED with this new knowledge about the SHUTTER BUTTON.
