The grip charges wirelessly with no issues, you just have to adjust it on the pad, and it works also with cheap chargers (10€ and up). After 2-3 adjustments you'll know how to position it so it starts charging immediately.

There are  however cheaper alternatives without wireless charging, JJC does a grip with Arca Swiss rails and access to battery and sd-card for around 50€, haven't tried one though. Same goes for the thumbs grip.

Thanks for your input Miltz & Voxen!  From the outside looking in, there does seems to be a 'cult of Leica', where folks go all-in on the brand and process of camera bling. It all seems like fun, if you have the money, but I'm curious if folks have recommendations for 3rd party alternatives.  For instance, I saw a LIM Q3 thumb support for $109, versus the $230 Leica.  Has anyone tried a 3rd party thumb support?

I do live by the ocean and have had a number of occasions over the years where grubby fingers, champagne bursts & beer spills have dotted my lens, so I am definitely getting a UV filter (most likely B+W, unless someone can convince why a Leica filter is better). I'm splurging on the half case as 1) I have seen a lot of used Q2's that are all chipped from use. It gives them a cool look in a way, but dissuades me from wanting to purchase the used camera. 2) There is also some nostalgia in it for me, as growing up I was surrounded by German and Japanese immigrants in our neighborhood who always had their small cameras in these leather holders, so the half case has personal appeal to me.

Anybody have recommendations on a good day bag for using while traveling.  The Oberwerth bags are heavily advertised with Leicas, but again, $600 for a bag??? I'm looking for something small and indiscreet for when the camera is not in use while traveling - any favorites?

Thanks for the input and dialog!

Hi,

here's just what I did.

- Protection filter: B&W 49 007 Clear MRC nano - absolute high quality filter. Not cheap, but also not unreasonable expensive. I just like to wipe the lens with my shirt when nothing else is available without any bad feeling. Also when being on a coast, I believe a protection filter makes sense. In normal daily live not necessarily, but ok.

- Lens shade: I love the original lens-shade, but I hate it, when I want to change filters (Polarizer, Gradient-Grey, ..). I've tried the Leica ventilated one, looks ok (still prefer the crushed can version), but 220 Euro was for my value-perception too much. So I ordered one from JJC for 35 Euro. Works perfectly fine, and looks practically identical. AND: During my vacation I turned around in a very tight space with a sandpaper like wall and directly scratched the lens-shade on the 3pm position quite a bit (visible in the attached picture, but some Edding will do the trick). In this case I am happy that it wasn't the original one ore a newly purchased one for 220 Euro, but just the one for 35 Euro. No regrets. And filter changes are quite easy with this.

- Thumb rest: I loved the Thumbrest on the Q2 and have used the original one. So far I am using the Q2 handgrip on the Q3, which I still had and was bargain part when I bought the Q2. It's very comfortable and I already had it ;) . For less bulk I would prefer the Thumbrest over the grip and I have looked up the one from LIM. I believe quality wise it is a good choice, but I really, really don't like the brass buttons - but that's my taste. I also anticipate from the images I have seen, that the LIM Thumbrest is quite a bit thicker compared to the Leica Original one. So in this case I would either go for a cheap JJC-one with the thin bridge to somehow be able to reach the buttons or the original one -  most likely the Leica-one.

- Soft release button: Just for fun I have screwed in the bug-O from match technical which I still had in my drawer. But it sticks quite far out (mechanical stress) and is not to my taste any more. However, I have bought a very tiny black one from JJC at Amazon for 9,99 Euro. The set contained two soft-releases (concave and convex, so you can choose what you prefer plus two O-rings have a more secured lock). This one is very flat and inconspicuous and, also a reason for me to use one, is locking up the thread, so that no grime can accumulate over time. Optically I also prefer the black vs. the silver threaded shutter-release. Haptic and touch wise in use it is also preferable for me.

As you can see in the attached picture (just an iPhone snap) I have also added the peak-design anchors. I love them as it is so easy to change between wrist strap (I use the PD-original) a strap (eddy-cam 35mm for me) or nothing within seconds.

All this talk of accessories has got me too excited for my Q3! I'm sick of waiting!

Ha!  Well, the reality of Leica expenditures has finally got me motivated enough to unload some of my backup cameras and lenses. This should get me enough to afford a Leica branded thumb support and maybe a Cooph strap (haha!).  eBay here we come!! 🙂

Chicago rocks! Did you get any discount? I should order from Abt instead of trying to save on tax with BH card...

Speaking about accessories.... I found another interesting thread about bags for the Q3 and some interesting comments about skipping the Leica soft buttons for ones with o-rings.

These look good in detail until I noticed the material used, but in the past I had Cordura bags, and they were not kind to my clothes by rubbing against them all the time. So I got rid of Cordura bags a long time ago.

Abt will charge us tax, being in state. There are many smaller dealers throughout the country that don't charge sales tax for out of state purchases. Pictureline, Hunts, District, etc..

Oh man congratulations to all those getting their Q3s! It's clear B&H is pretty low priority for Leica.

Ya pretty sad. But perhaps it's because Leica considers B&H a "direct" competitor?  I did a Google search on "largest selling photography equipment stores by revenue in the world" and it came up with this list.  I'm not using this as a "trusted source", but check out #10 & 11 - pretty close!  Regardless of standings, it's pretty clear they don't like each other much.

1. Sony Group Corporation (2021 revenue: $8.44 billion)
2. Canon Inc (2021 revenue: $5.11 billion)
3. Fujifilm Holdings Corporation (2021 revenue: $1.71 billion)
4. Lifetouch (2021 revenue: $1.5 billion)
5. Nikon (2021 revenue: $1.16 billion)
6. Eastman Kodak Co (2021 revenue: $1.15 billion)
7. Panasonic Holdings Corp (2021 revenue: $1 billion)
8. Getty Images Holdings Inc (2021 revenue: $0.91 billion)
9. Shutterstock Inc (2021 revenue: $0.77 billion)
10. B&H Photo (2021 revenue: $460 million)
11. Leica Camera (2021 revenue: $432.4 million)
12. Polaroid (2021 revenue: $300 million)
13. Ricoh Co Ltd (2021 revenue: $116.9 million)
14. Adorama Camera, Inc. (2021 revenue: $100 million)
15. OM Digital Solutions (2021 revenue: $43.7 million)
16. Hasselblad (2021 revenue: $38.6 million)

Just a comment…don’t know how much stock I’d put in it…as a dealer most of our suppliers (including Leica) try to treat everyone fairly and will ship every dealer a number of camera’s dependant on their volume…a dealer that sells 1/2 the cameras as another will get 1/2 the number of camera shipped.

Really large dealers, such as B&H get a lot of cameras…but they get a huge amount of orders because people think they will get a ton of stock because they are so big.

So we (in essence a small dealer in Canada) received 1/2 dozen Q3…and had a enough customers that we supplied them all.

On the other hand B&H may have received 50….but had 100 orders immediately because they thought B&H would be their best bet.

So we look good to our customers…B&H doesn’t.

That’s why it may look like small dealers are being favoured.

And over the long haul building a relationship with your local/ nearest dealer pays dividends. You may get on the list sooner, and you may get better treatment when something goes wrong.

I am now on my AD’s list for a Q3. I may have a long wait but I don’t care as I have a Q2 bought from him. Should anything go wrong it’s in his interest to get it fixed for me.

That is also true.  If someone comes in and orders a camera, and they have given me their business for years they definitely get the camera before someone who has never dealt with me and has put in an order at 5 different stores figuring they will take the first one that calls them with a camera.
