Known by its address, 860 Lake Shore Drive, together with 880 were the first two of eventually four apartment buildings on this Chicago lakefront site by world renowned architect Ludwig Meis van der Rohe.

When begun in 1949, the design in the International Style that Meis brought with him from the Bauhaus in Weimar, was not readily accepted here. The concept of exposing the structural elements of a building on its exterior and the minimalist approach to ornamentation were quite radical three-quarters of a century ago.

The four buildings, later including 900 and 910, now with international status and landmark recognition, eventually became the archetypal examples for the designs of steel and glass commercial and residential skyscrapers everywhere that followed.

It would be fair to say however, that some still have not warmed to the glass boxes that they consider “cold” and inhospitable architecture.

Thank you Lelmer, I'm glad you think my photos and narratives instructive. Probably TMI, but I feel a duty to other architects to credit their accomplishments.

they are probably seabirds.....
