Finally got the Q3 after almost 6 months wait. First shot after setup.  Only lights from keyboard and my nearby iPhone.

(The dark areas are so clean.  This was the unedited JPEG. The DNG, too large to post here, is even more 3D like.  Brings me back to my M6 days, shooting with the 35 Summilux.  There is no way my iPhone 15PM can take something like this)

This is actually pretty good. You are lucky to live somewhere where the sky is as black as it is!

The basic problem is that, during the necessary long exposure, the stars have moved, thus showing elongated shapes. the only way around this is to mount the camera on a tripod that tracks the star movement. If you know someone with a telescope and tripod that does this, it should not be too difficult to mount your camera on the same tripod.

That said, you might find it more interesting to aim at a recognizable constellation, such as Orion, so that you can then identify the stars.

David

I did take Orion, low on the horizon in this 15 second exposure. The photo was taken with a tabletop tripod placed on the bed of a truck. I will see if I can find someone with a tracking tripod like you suggest. I remember seeing them advertised years ago but have not seen them recently.

Possibly this forum is cleverer than I thought and recognises your phone is an imposter and not a Leica and turns the image to the 'dark side'...

but why does it recognize it sometime and other times not?

And by the way. The images have a metadata history. So if this recognition is any good it would see this.

And how are we then dealing with images made on film?

So the website eis able to recognize the Leica pixel?

Maybe it is down to AI, in which case I understand the haphazard behaviour.

These are all beautiful, but in particular the first one--it's just gorgeous and worthy of wall hanging consideration.

Hi Brent.  I just noticed your link to your gallery.  I am looking through it as I get time.  Wonderful stuff.  Some great portraits.  As a UW grad and crew team follower since the 60's, I really liked your shot of the crew at sunrise.  One of my best friends from high school and the neighborhood was on the crew team when they went to Henley in 1973 way back.  Brings back memories.

All Leica or do you shoot other cameras, too.

Thanks very much, Aram. I've shot with Leica M since 1978, but when shooting for a living I also used Nikons for several years, then Canon. Since retiring in 2011, I am 100 percent Leica.
