Sometime between M4 and M6, the manufacturing was improved to make the parts interchangeable.  Before that the machining was not as precise and the assembler needed to “adjust” for differences.  There are still a few adjustment points, but previously many more.  BTW Smith and Wesson has improved the machining and the revolvers go together with little hand fitting.

With the Leica M,  materials were “improved” to withstand the motor drives of 1980`s.  They are not as smooth as early M even if in perfect condition. Steel gears just are not brass.

One of my 1954  M3 cameras just came back from DAG today.  It was last serviced around 1980.  What a joy.  It operates like a Swiss watch.
