I need a little extra flash power in dark night clubs for the D2/L1. I am considering the Leica SF24D for it's compactness and reputation...however, I would like to know which Metz flash and adapter would work as well....any input will be greatly appreciated

Thank you,

Darlene.

Darlene,

The D2 and L1 are two different cameras. The D2 or Digilux 2's Panasonic brother is the LC1. The L1 is the Panasonic equivalent of the Digilux 3. This is imporrtant as they use different flash interfaces. The Digilux2/LC1 uses the SCA3502 mod 4 interface. The Digilux 3/L1 uses the Olympus foot, the SCA3202 mod 5. Thus the SF24 will not work on the Digilux 3. The 44MZ2 is a good flash if you can live without a swivel head. If you need both tilt and swivel the 54Mz4 is a possible choice. Or if your camera is the D3 you can use Oly flash guns as well.

Darlene, I use the 54 with my D2 and M8. There are several postings here maligning the ungainliness of the flash on the D2 and M8.

I find it easy to handle, enormously powerful, and very flexible. I use a Stofen diffuser on it with the head at about 45 degrees.

You can set this thing to an iso, set the aperture at the recommended one, and the shutter speed to 1/250. The results are always dependable.

The head on the 20 and 24 doesn't tilt, I believe.

If you do a search on flash you will see lots of postings. There were several threads on this subject during the last 2 months.

I use the Metz 40MZ3i on my D2 with the 3502M4 This combination works perfectly with auto ZOOM head control, twin reflectors and auto-Aperture control between D2 and Flash.

This flash has a nice low profile compared with Cobra head designs. However it is getting a little old and when used on a D3 with the appropriate 3202M5, it become a 'simple' flash(set zoom and aperature manually in flash) with NO auto zoom control and NO auto aperature communication with the D3. Which I am very surprised given than Panasonic could do it via the D2 electronics and not the D3..... unless Olympus's licensing in the 4/3 parts of the D3 didn't allow for such integration.

Today I would go like Bill......with a minimum of 54MZ4i which would work on D2, D3 and M8

.....which is the current playground for existing D2 owners.

The Metz website Home: Metz website has a SCA tool that identifies which SCA is require for each Metz model flash on supported cameras.
