Capture One Express was free software.  They decided not to provide free software anymore.  To my original point, why should software engineers have to work for free and hardware engineers get to eat steak and retire wealthy?

I can't remember which version but folks who got what they thought was a permanent licence with a new camera, then had it turned off remotely. You would need to read back through this thread to find the details.

That was Capture One Express.  Capture One Express was always free.  Many hardware purchases come with a limited time free piece of software.  I've seen temporary free Microsoft Office and McAfee come with new computers and that at some point you need to buy a license.  I've seen many years ago a Photoshop lite version that would come with cameras free.  I know that doesn't work anymore unless someone is running Windows XP.

I have a paid Capture One Pro licenses.  It doesn't expire and doesn't require an internet connection.  It will run as long as I want to run a piece of hardware and operating system to run it on.

Again, it comes down to many people not understanding that software companies need to pay the engineers that develop the software like any other business.  I know many folks think that geeks just love doing their jobs so much they don't get paid.  Without software, any piece of hardware from a refrigerator to a Leica Camera is just a fancy hammer.

Hmmm... I remember having to log in to verify/validate my license.  At one point the software launched the browser to do that.  It was about that time I gave up on Capture One.  I'd already had other reasons, the login requirement was the final straw.  That was 2 or 3 years ago.  Things may be different, now.

I also had a Capture One Pro subscription a couple of years ago and I had to log in online every or every other time I started the software (from what I remember). Would be good to know if that has changed.

I had this happen once after an update. Support helped me fix it. I don't remember the cause or the cure since it was many years ago.

Didn't have it before nor after.
