A year ago I purchased a used Leica SL (1) and returned it, partly because I wasn't blown away by the image quality (although OK) and partly because I found it quite bulky.

I love a Rangefinder and have been trying to love my M240 for a couple of years, but have never enjoyed fiddling with the colour output. Using the same M lenses on my Sigma FP just looks nicer to me.

So recently I spotted a very reasonably priced Hasselblad X1D ii. Probably the only reason I could contemplate it is down to the 45p lens, which is affordable, I might never be able to afford the other XCD lenses unless I win the lottery. But 35mm focal length is my favourite anyway (which is 45 in X1D terms).

I traded my M240 in on the X1D2 and it arrived yesterday. I'm actually shocked how small and light it is. The image quality is of course outstanding. I zoomed in 200% on one of my test shots and the area in focus was still clear and sharp, not pixelated.

I saw reviews saying it was quite small, but I was actually shocked. I only had the SL for a few weeks a year ago, but the X1D ii seems at least as light (if not more) and easier to handle.

Similar view here with a GFX100S and GF 50mm lens, it’s 2/3rds the weight of the SL2 and SL APO Summicron that I sold. And noticeably more compact with that particular GF lens at least.

I loved my Leica Q, other than the 28mm view.

Now I'm seeing some of the rumoured spec of the Q3 (still with 28mm) I'm happy I bought the X1D 2. It's easy to carry, compact with the 45p lens and has the colour and rendition similar to what I enjoyed with the Q.

Chris, you didn’t mention which M lenses you have/had or the photo software you use.

Although the X1D 1and 2 have nice handgrips (better than the SL1 which feels like a house brick) I was put off X1D by their own raw sample shots on the Hasselblad website when I downloaded and worked on them in Lightroom. Maybe using the camera in real life with your own subjects is better than their samples.

i find I’m very happy with M10 raw files in Lightroom as they look natural and as I remember at time of taking while requiring little post processing to get a pleasing result.

I think Torsten Overgard liked the M9, M10 colours but the M240 and now M11 not so much as he says it takes him quite some time to work out how to make them how he likes.

It sounds like you’ve found better colours with X1D mk2 and Hasselblad Colour Science than you had with M240, it should have better dynamic range too.

The X2D with the new 38V and 55V lenses is a £15K system so there’s no worry for either of us being tempted there, it’s a bulkier camera anyway i tell myself. Odd focal lengths too that don’t match 35mm equivalent of 35mm 50mm.

An SL2s with M lenses might be better competition for X1Dmk2 noise/dynamic range and the SL2 has a better handgrip now and IBIS that SL1 didn’t have.

Good luck.

User of SL2-S, M11 and x2d here.

My subjective feelings are:

I am not totally happy with lightroom anymore, when using it for SL2-S and/or M11. From my current first comparisons it seems C1 does a better job in regards of profiles, for my taste.

The x2d color is closer to my liking in LR, compared to my Leicas , and it seems slightly easier to work with. Its allready pretty good without much/any tweaking.

Phocus seems even a little better for the Hassy (what a surprise ;) ) - and it gives me a safe feeling to have hardware and software from the same brand.

In regards of focal length...38 and 55 which translate somewhere in Fullframe 30 and 4X mm (it is not so easy to compare because of the different aspect ration 3:4 vs 2:3) I feel this works quite well for street , travel, family, and the new 28 (which is like 22mm fullframe) is also a very usefull focal length.

I miss face detection in the x2d, on the other side IQ wise one gets rewarded every time when using the x2d. Specially skin tones or more difficult light situations.

I dont know how much comes from profiles and how much from the sensor.

Overall I am dissappointed about Lightrooms profiles for Leica. Also lens correction for the x2d in LR is not as good as the one in phocus.

I am at the point to switch to c1 for my Leica images and use focus for Hassy. Even though I hate to learn new interfaces.

Another option might be good third party profiles for LR. Any suggestions?
