This dam (Haringvlietdam) controls the flow from the Rhine river into the sea and the intrusion of salt water through high water from the sea - and of course to protect the low areas (I live at -2 m.)  during storm floods. The 17 doors over a length of 4.5 km control 30 billion cubic meters of water yearly and the doors open and close individually according to the water flow. The concrete blocks contain special tunnels for fish to pass.
